Mount Vernon, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. Mount Vernon is located on the border of McLean County and Kane County. It is bordered by the towns of Arlington Heights to the south and West Springfield to the east. The first people to live near what is now Mount Vernon were Native American traders and travelers who passed through in search of trade goods with other cultures. In 1795, a group of white men named George Washington and his party camped on the banks of the Potomac River for eight weeks while they explored new lands in what is now Virginia. One day when they were out walking their dog, Lieutenant Colonel John Mercer saw them from a hilltop and called to them; Washington replied "We are passing through this country." The two men began trading goods back and forth for years before Washington purchased land adjacent to present-day Mount Vernon from Mercer for £1 million in 1802. In 1812, President James K. Polk sent an expedition led by General David Dixon to explore East Tennessee Valley territory which later became part of Missouri. On their way back across the Ohio River they stopped at Forks over the river'sedge on September 15, 1812, where they met Major General William Clark's force consisting of 12 companies (the largest number ever mounted on one column) under command of Captain Ulysses S. Grant that had just defeated Andrew Jackson's army at Battle Creek Bridge four days earlier. When General Dixon learned that he was meeting another general instead of Clark he ordered his soldiers not to fire upon him even though there was no real danger as both generals were only making friendly visits; however Captain Grant did not take kindly to this decision and opened fire without orders two hours later killing 10 Americans and wounding 30 more before being dragged off into captivity by Jackson's forces seventeen miles away at Sunbury Heights where he would die three days later after being tortured beyond recognition before finally being put into an oven alive according as food for pigs Aftermath: After General Dixon's death Congress authorized appropriations for building a military post along with Fort Dearborn (later Chicago) which were used to create Fort Butler on May 14th, 1815 along with Ft Michilimackinac in Michigan Territory less than two months later; these fortifications served as a deterrent against possible aggressions from Indiana Territory until February 24th following its cession when it became part of Illinois When Illinois achieved statehood in 1847 all land westward including present day Mount Vernon was annexed into Indianapolis Township within Terre Haute Township concurrent with plans for another city called Hobart which never materialized due largely because settlers preferred living close enough to work but also because money was scarce during this time period Mount Vernon today: Today Mount Vernon remains primarily agricultural with some light industry including a few stores providing basic needs like groceries, ammunition and clothing although there are also some homeschooling families operating out Of Sight Academy since 1978
