Composite stocks proved much stronger than traditional leather or synthetic stocks and lasted longer when subjected to wear & tear from gunfire. By 1850 most American manufacturers had abandoned composite stock manufacturing in favor of leather or synthetic materials again because these materials outperformed compositestock in terms of strength & durability under repeated use & abuse
