Mount Vernon is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. The Mount Vernon post office is located in the town. The name "Mount Vernon" is taken from George Washington's home plantation on Mount Vernon Plantation outside of Fairfax County, Virginia. The original Mount Vernon estate was acquired by his father in 1793 and developed into one of the most extensive plantations in North America. In 1801, Washington purchased an additional 100 acres (40 hectares) near present-day Mount Zion Cemetery to serve as his burial ground and primary residence. He died there on December 14, 1800. His widow Martha Washington continued to live at Mount Vernon until her death in 1832; after her death, it passed through several hands before being sold to James Knoebel of Crystal City for $4 million in 1926. Knoebel renovated much of the property during World War II and used it as a munitions plant; today only a few buildings remain from that period including the old armory which once functioned as a library and museum combination. After World War II ended and the plant closed down, many of the workers were transferred to other plants throughout Illinois but some still live hereabouts including Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt who resided here from 1948 until her death in 1994. In 2003, Knoebel donated all remaining assets--including land adjacent to what is now known as "Nursery Road"—to the local community for use as school facilities with funding provided by then-President George W Bush's administration under President Bill Clinton via his Department of Education program called AmeriCorps highway safety grant money A total of $21 million has been invested over 16 years by private investors led by Richard Muhlenberg who also owns 400 acres adjacent to Park Ridge High School just east of Route 56/I-88 exit ramp which will house new football stadium across street (Racial diversity & opportunity are key themes addressed within football stadium design)

Mount Vernon is a small city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,694 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Mount Vernon was Nicholas Clapp, who arrived in 1795 and established a log cabin on the hill now known as Clapp's Hill. He named his home "Nicholasstown" after his father-in-law Nicholas Clapp (1736–1814), one of the earliest white settlers in what would become Mount Vernon Township. In 1810, John Dickey built a large frame house on land that he had bought from Nicholas Clapp and named it Mount Vernon House. The first trustees of Mount Vernon Township were Fayette Butler (1813–1911), James Woodbury (1815–1920), Samuel Morse (1827–1900) and Arapaho Chief Joseph Custer (1833–1912). In 1834, when Illinois became statehood and Mount Vernon became an incorporated town, it added four miles to its borders to form Addison Township; this township would eventually be renamed Mt. Prospect Township in honor of early resident James Prentice Moody Sr., founder of Moody Armour & Co., one of Chicago's largest corporations. In 1847, when Pace University was founded nearby by Distinguished Professor Abraham Lincoln, the town voted to annex Pace University so that it could have closer education opportunities for its citizens. But annexation failed because there were no provisions made for sharing municipal services between the two townships—a situation that would continue until 1960 when Pace merged with Northwestern University to create Chicago State University). After years of trying by both communities and individual residents alike, finally an agreement was reached whereby both townships shared their combined resources equally: funding for firefighting went from Pace to Mountvern; roads were laid out through their respective neighborhoods; trash pickup occurred jointly instead of separately each time; library materials were shared between the two townships;and even common criminals such as burglaries were caught together rather than singly or individually pursued by police forces across town lines! This merger marked a watershed moment not only for Mountvernians but also for Champaign-Urbanaans as a whole—the first time any community within greater Chicagoland had ever come together voluntarily to share basic services like these! Although much has changed since then—most notably with suburban development encroaching into what once constitueted downtown Mtvern—the spirit behind this initial effort still lives on today: cooperation among friends is key to making our hometown great again!
