A log schoolhouse still stands near Maxwell Road and North Clark Street; it served as a public school from 1814 to 1840. A brick school building was erected on State Road (now Pulaski Highway) across from the present library in 1830–31; it continued to serve as a public school until 1903 when it became the Mount Vernon Academy for Girls. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln issued an executive order calling for all white men over eighteen years of age to be registered with the Ulysses S Grant School District No 2 located just outside of town on Monroe Drive. This effort led to new schools being established throughout Cook County including one within two miles of Fort Wayne where black children were taught by white instructors starting in 1865 under conditions that were often harsh and abusive compared with those experienced by white students living nearby. In 1870, race riots occurred near Chicago which followed an attack upon Judge Elijah Holmes’ office by whites angry about reports he had been guilty of bribery while serving as recorder for DuPage County In 1871, Congress enacted laws allowing African Americans within five miles of cities or large towns to vote without havingto register along with other citizens black or white – this provision applied specifically to blacks living north of Decatur Street between State Road (now Pulaski Highway) and Marshall Boulevard known as “Negroville” until integration began there also took place southward beginning with blocks off South Milwaukee Avenue known as “White Settlement” following passage of legislation providing voting rights based primarily upon residency rather than color Mount Vernon experienced its first tornado outbreak during November 1862 which killed seven people before being finally destroyed by military forces thirteen days later In 1865, Reconstruction ended when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated In 1892–93 construction began on what would become Northwestern University which opened its doors six years later mountvernoniloveyou

Mount Vernon is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Mount Vernon was founded in 1837 by General James K. Polk as a small trading post on the north side of the Sangamon River. The community grew rapidly due to its location near two important ferry terminals and its easy access to transportation and trade. In 1863, Mount Vernon became an incorporated town and continued to grow until it reached its present size in 1920. As a result of its growth and importance, Mount Vernon has developed many notable residents including George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. The original Mount Vernon settler named Edward Everett Hale described his experience living on what would eventually become Mount Vernon as "a very pretty spot". He noted that there were no trees ormans hereabouts but "a rich soil full of all sorts of plants". This fertile ground soon yielded crops such as corn, beans and potatoes which were sold throughout the surrounding villages for goods such as butter or flour. By 1860, businesses had been established in both Mt. Vernon and nearby Village of Aurora with goods being transported downriver via ferries to be unloaded at Village Landing on the Sangamon River where customers could purchase items such as clothing or farm tools before shipping them downstream again across the river to other settlements like Aurora or Warsaw (now Peoria). In 1874-75 General James K Polk travelled through Kane County from Mt. Vernon to tour various townships including those around Chicago when he noticed a small farming outpost called Arlington built on land east of the Sangamon River about three miles upstream from current day Arlington Heights Cemetery - still known today simply as Arlington Heights - because it had not yet been annexed by any municipality back then! His visit inspired him to start planning for what would become Arlington Heights later that year when he learned that some landowners wanted their land ceded back because they saw no future use for it within city limits given how fast population growth was expanding into newly annexed suburbs like Lakeview Terrace (later Elgin), Oak Park/River Hills (later Streamwood) etcetera! In 1876-77 President Ulysses S Grant toured Kane County while visiting Springfield during his annual vacation which included stops at several communities along his route including Mt. Vernon; this led to renovation work being done on pedestrian crossings located just east of Main Street between Herndon Road & Wabash Avenue in downtown Mtvern right next door now known as Knox Presbyterian Church ! On December 12th 1879 Congress passed an act annexing Cook County so all lands east of Bloomington Rd & southwesterly boundary line were added making MountVernon annexation complete exact date unknown but occurred after November 6th 1880 thru an act entitled An Act To Amend The Laws Of Illinois For The Year Ending March 4th 1881 !! So congressional action aside Mt Varnon remained unchanged till 1920 !!
The first white person to live on Mount Vernon was James K. Polk, who arrived in 1847. In 1854, the United States acquired the land from Native American chiefs for $4,000. The town of Mount Vernon grew up around the resulting development.
