Mount Vernon, Illinois is a census-designated place in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 956 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Mount Vernon was laid out by James K. Polk in 1837 as a small community near what is now Cicero and North Side Avenues. The name derived from Union General Ambrose Burnside's visit to Mount Vernon in 1834 during the Battle of Yorktown and his observation that "the mound on which our fathers built their homes seemed more like a shrine than an earthly city". The first settler in Mount Vernon was George Washington who lived there with his wife Martha until her death in 1799; then he moved to Alexandria, Virginia where he died four years later. Other notable early residents include Thomas Jefferson (1801-1848), James K. Polk (1845-1924) and Abraham Lincoln (1861-1916). In 1841, John Pritzker bought 1/4 interest in the town from William Woodruff for $5 per acre ($ today). Pritzker renamed itMount Vernon after President Franklin D. Roosevelt who had visited the area while campaigning for re-election that year and named many of the streets after American presidents including Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive, Harry S Truman Boulevard and Eleanor Roosevelt Boulevard among others

Mount Vernon is located on Illinois Route 31 south of St. Charles and east of Mount Prospect. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Mount Vernon was David Rice who arrived in 1824 from Maryland. He built a log cabin on the east side of the creek that flows through town today. In 1828, John Walker moved to what is now Mount Vernon from Indiana and started a farm there with his wife Sophia and their children as well as other early settlers including Isaac Goodyear (1796-1868), James Wafer (1799-1860), Nicholas Valentine (1802-1857), John Fenton (1804-1868), Solomon Jewett (1800-1881) and George Hammond (1800-1884). Many families lived on or near present day Streets 1, 2, 3 and 4 until all but one were driven out by Indian Wars or timber theft during the late 1830s and 1840s when much of central Illinois was purchased by Great Britain for colonization purposes under the auspices of President James K. Polk in 1848. In 1853, Samuel Morse contracted with Western Union to build an line from Chicago to Rockford overland via Mt Vernon which became known as The Western Union Telegraph Line because it connected Upper Michigan with Lower Illinois This line later became part of American Telephone & Telegraph Company’s wires extending westward from Chicago across Iowa into Kansas Territory before finally terminating at Topeka, Kansas in 1907. By 1860, only about 60 people remained in Mount Vernon while another 150+ had relocated within McHenry County since its founding four years earlier Most residents worked either on local farms or country stores located close to home while some men also operated sawmills or operated coal mines nearby . One can still find several original buildings still standing such as David Rice’s log cabin which remains currently house number 2; John Walker’s farmhouse which still stands vacant; Folger House(now used as a storage container lot) ; Nicholas Valentine’s brick home(now used as apartments); George Hammond’s two storey frame home(now occupied by Clinton Township High School); Solomon Jewett Jr.'s three story wood frame house originally built about 1850; etc . Today much of downtown Mt Vernon has been replaced by modern architecture with most remaining buildings having been abandoned for decades . However one building that still standsNotable exceptions are: Daniel Webster's two story stone framed adobe dwelling built about 1800; Methodist Episcopal Church erected around 1840.; Mrs Mabel Hubbard's new whiteframe limestone styled structure built about 1907 . There have also been many additionals developed such as: Masonic Lodge No 1 constructed circa 1900; First Methodist Episcopal Church erected 1903 upon donation from Mrs Hilda Palmer Boothe[1]; Baptist Church erected 1906 upon donation from Saundra Coulter Webb[2]; Roman Catholic church established 1928 Upon Donation From Mother Theresa Of Jesus Parish Of Rochelle Park[3]; Holy Cross Byzantine Chuch erected 1957 upon donation from Arthur Jaffe . With exception of Methodist Episcopal Church no less than five churches have been added since 1800 making Mt Vernon one very active religious community during its history particularly given its small population size It should be noted that although mountvernon has experienced numerous changes throughout its centuries it always retains many cultural features including music styles popularized both locally and nationally during this time period like ragtime played by Nathan Bedford Forrest & His Orchestra & Bluegrass band Big Joe Turner ; annual Pumpkin Festival held in October featuring arts& crafts exhibitors along with food trucks ,livemusicandgames ); name changed to “Mount Washington Village" after current villagestatus change effective date 9/11/2018 due to lack of consensus among residents [4]
The first settlement in Mount Vernon was made by the Potawatomi Indians in the late 18th century. The area that is now Mount Vernon was part of the Creek Nation before it became a United States territory in 1828. In 1832, Congress created the Illinois Territory, including Mount Vernon, and appointed a commission to survey and plan its boundaries. The commissioners recommended that the land be divided into two counties, Cook County on the north side of Chicago and McHenry County on the south side. After much debate, Congress approved the proposal and created Cook County on December 12, 1833. In 1834, John Quincy Adams became president of America and ordered federal troops to take control of Illinois from the state government. The troops marched through Springfield to Mount Vernon and burned all of the Indian villages in what is now downtown Chicago. This event is considered one of Adams' early achievements as president. Mount Vernon experienced some significant growth during this time period. In 1840, legislation passed by Congress designated a portion of eastern Cook County as Arlington Heights for George Washington Boulevard (now Wabash Avenue). This designation allowed for development near Soldier Field which would soon become one of Chicago's most famous neighborhoods. Additionally, Mount Vernon saw construction of several important churches during this time period – Saint Patrick's Catholic Church (1845), Trinity Episcopal Church (1846), First Congregational Church (1850), Methodist Episcopal Church (1851), and Presbyterianism's first church in America – Second Presbyterian Chapel (1857).
