The original club was sanctioned by the state of Illinois and its president, George Washington Hill. The earliest gun targets date back to 1876 when a rifle club was founded in Mount Vernon by George Washington Hill. The club used an old fort as its target range. Targets at that time were made from logs and planks which were simply nailed to a tree or post. The next year, 1877, another rifle club was formed in Mount Vernon and it also used an old fort as its target range. This club had more success than the first because it could attract more shooters from throughout Illinois. In 1879, a third rifleclub was chartered in Mount Vernon and it also used an old fort as its target range. This club became known as the “Gentlemen’s Rifle Club” because membership amounted to only ten gentlemen at that time. In 1886-87, two new rifle clubs were chartered at Mount Vernon: one using live ammo while the other used shotguns only for their gunsights training purposes. Mount Vernon is an unincorporated community in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The community was established in 1868 by the merger of two small villages, Canongate and Mount Pleasant. It lies on the border of Kane County and McLean County, Illinois. Mount Vernon is located at (41.327815, -87.744959). The village of Canongate was founded in 1851 by John Cafferty and his family from Scotland. Canongate grew to be a major agricultural center with soils rich in clay and loam that made possible large-scale cultivation of corn, beans, wheat, barley, vegetables and fruits. In 1868 the village merged with Mount Pleasant to form one entity known as Mount Vernon. From its inception until 1964 the population of Mount Vernon was limited to about 100 people who engaged in subsistence agriculture or conducted occasional tourist attractions such as a gift shop and restaurant. However, since then the population has grown significantly due to suburban growth within Kane County as well as increased tourism opportunities around Greater Chicago area which have led to new development within the boundaries of Mount Vernon including homes for sale and apartments for rent. In recent years there has been significant interest in buying or developing land adjacent toMount Vernon resulting in new construction activity on both sides of US Highway 24W which bisects the community east-west along its length

Mount Vernon, Ill. is an unincorporated community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The Mount Vernon post office was established in 1868, and remained in operation until it closed in 1974. It was located on the east side of Mount Vernon Township. As of the 2010 census, the population of Mount Vernon was 511 people. The first permanent settler at what is now Mount Vernon was Abram Stroud who arrived there about 1814 from Kent County, England. He and his family built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the Potawatomi River near modern day Chicago. Abram's brother Nathaniel also settled there about this time and founded the town of Mount Vernon which later became part of Chicago. In 1829 John Hoadley purchased land east of present day Chicago from Abram Stroud for $5 per acre (!!). John Hoadley had come to America as part of the "Great White Way" migration and had been appointed surveyor General by US President James K. Polk to supervise construction of a new national road across central Illinois called the Mississippi Road or "the fur trail." In 1830 John Hoadley laid out a townsite on this land consisting of two square blocks with four stories high each - one block north and one south of where he erected his home now stands known as North Side Street (now Wabash Avenue). This site would become known as Mount Pleasant after him because he offered free land to any European settler who could name their own village upon reaching American soil- something that many did not manage to do because they lacked money or connections! The first post office at Mount Pleasant was established on December 4th, 1868 by Elijah Jarman with Pemberton Postmaster General Robert Stephenson serving as assistant postmaster general during its inaugural year.. It served until1974 when it closed due to lack postal service.. Today only remnants remain including Jarman's house still standing today next door to NorthSide Street which is also currently listed on the National Register Of Historic Places!
