Mount Vernon was laid out in 1827 by John Jacob Astor and wife Sarah Snively Astor. The first settler in the community was Nicholas Douglass. The community grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s due to its location on a high bluff overlooking the Sangamon River valley and its easy access to trade with neighboring townships. In 1846, Mount Vernon's main street—later known as Washington Boulevard—was shortened from two miles (3 km) to one miles (1 km). During World War II, Mount Vernon became an important center for American military production because it had several leading industrial companies located there including Hughes Aircraft Company and Raytheon Corporation. The town experienced some financial setbacks during the war but resurgence following the end of hostilities helped those businesses rebound quickly.Mount Vernon has seen periodic revitalization over time; however, many of its commercial enterprises have either closed or been sold off since 2000.
