At that time there were only three men living on what is now Mount Vernon: Hays, John Cook and Jonas Hilliard Sr.. The town charter was granted on November 5th, 1835 by Ulysses S. Grant who had been then Governor of Illinois A store and hotel were built near the courthouse square by early 1840s with help from local banks which donated lands for this purpose including land now belonging to Holy Cross Church and State University of Missouri–Kansas City campus). By 1845 there were over 100 residents living in what is now Mount Vernon A schoolhouse/church complex (renamed Mt Pleasant Methodist Episcopal Church around 1850) soon followed with additions such as a blacksmith shop (1852), carriage workshop (1854), two stores (1855), two churches (1856), physician Dr Treadwell’s office (1857) In 1863 Union general William Tecumseh Sherman arrived at Camp Chase near present day Springfield and ordered all troops out west; this order led to more businesses opening up along the new route between St Louis and Cairo By 1870 there were also five residences within one mile of downtown where people could buy goods or service including millinery shops, dry goods stores etc.; these developments helped jumpstart economic development inside today's town limits However much growth did not take place until after World War II when many new homes were built especially around Mechanic Square Today mountvernon has become an active community hub with many businesses open late into the night as well as several large cultural festivals throughout year
