Mount Vernon is a small town in DeKalb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Mount Vernon is located on the north side of the Chicago River and east of downtown Chicago. The first Europeans to visit what is now Mount Vernon were French traders in 1679–80. In 1762, George Washington led a force of 300 men across the river to drive out the French from this area and founded Mount Vernon as a military outpost on land that had been given to him by his father-in-law, Colonel James Robertson. The town grew quickly and by 1800 it had 2,500 inhabitants. In 1824, Washington bought 1/4 acre (0.20 km2) of land along the river for $1 per year from John Duryea. He named the tract "Mount Vernon" after himself and built a log cabin there as his home and office until he resigned from public life in 1828 and moved to Alexandria, Virginia. In 1835–36 President Andrew Jackson visited Mount Vernon on several occasions while he was campaigning for reelection against John Quincy Adams; one report says that Jackson "was very much interested in its scenery." During his travelogue he noted that: "It has an interesting appearance; its surface being composed entirely of sandstone blocks having been cut into regular shapes with greatregularity; each block about twenty feet (6 m) square...The blocks are large enough not only for building but also for throwing up walls around settlements." In 1840 Congress authorized erection of a national cemetery within “the limits hereby prescribed” which included alluvial plains lying between Lake Michigan and Prairie du Chien northwest thereof including those now embraced within Arlington Heightsnorthwest cornerof said townshipand northeast cornerof villageof Mount Prospectsouthwest corner thereof etc., thence by due course unto lake Michigan westward... Congressional determination dated April 25th Abr 5th 1840 states 'to lay out upon these lauds…a National Cemetery for our dead.'" When Arlington Heights was organized as a town in 1888 it annexed parts of Mount Vernon including what is now Dutch Hill Park (). That same year Congress established an endowment fund to be used "for erecting proper structures at or near Burlington [sic] College [now Northeastern Illinois University]'s campus". The college's first president Revd Dr Edwin Everett Strong solicited contributions towards this goal from individuals throughout America so that "Burlington College may become properly endowed." By 1896 Burlington College had purchased 4 acres (1 km2) near present-day Clinton Road () on which they erected buildings bearing their name still standing today – both academic institutions continue using similar architecture over 250 years later! A number of other schools have also been established within or adjacent to Mount Vernon since then including: Downers Grove Academy (), Elmhurst Prep (), Highland Park School (), Mt Carmel School (), North Shore Daycare Center (), Roosevelt Middle School (), Southshore Daycare Center (). Today Mount Vernon remains one of few towns in America unaffected by suburbanization with more than 60% residents living inline or close to their jobs – making it an attractive place to live, work, raise children and shop!

Mount Vernon is a census-designated place in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Mount Vernon has been associated with the town since 1790 when it was established as a trading post on the north side of the future Chicago River by General James K. Polk and his army during their Expedition against the Osage Nation. Its location made it strategically important to both sides in the American Revolutionary War because it controlled access to shipping on one side of the river and to troops on the other. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson's Federalist forces destroyed John Adams' home at Mount Vernon while he was president and many of his family were inside. Adams' son-in-law Nathan Hale served as an interpreter for negotiations that led to Jackson's capture in 1818 at Yorktown Ridge near present day Arlington Heights, Illinois. The home and contents were later donated to Mount Vernon Academy where they remain today as a museum open to the public. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln becamethe first US president born outside of New England when he left Springfield for Washington D.C., via Baltimore–Washington Station over Mt Vernon Bridge into Maryland before continuing on to Gettysburg where he was assassinated less than two months later. On April 14th, 1865 (which would have been Lincoln's 45th birthday), Union troops burned down much of Mount Vernon including Mrs Lincoln's home which still stands today as a private residence in nearby Arlington Heights.. In 1927 Mount Vernon Newspapers merged with Northwestern Paper Company becoming Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company until its sale in 1996 to Time Warner who retains ownership today
