Mount Vernon, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,852 at the 2010 census. Mount Vernon is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It was named for George Washington and his first wife Martha Custis Lee. The first gun grip in Mount Vernon was made by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1795. It consisted of an iron band with a round hole drilled in it to allow an ordinary person to hold the weapon with one hand while drawing it with the other hand. After the death of Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1802, his son Alexis took up production of gun grips until 1827 when he moved to Paris. His grandson Nicolas-Jacques Conte continued production until 1862 when all guns were discontinued due to American Civil War feverquake and ammunition shortages. A rifle company called "The Riflemen" was organized on November 3rd, 1853 by order of General Andrew Johnson as retribution for Union victories over Confederate forces at Pea Ridge and Monterrey Bayou during the Mexican–American War. On November 8th of that year, Captain John Hurd led a detachment from this company into Mount Vernon on horseback to purchase rifles from Dutch gunsmiths known as "The Gunners". They arrived on December 5th and began construction of what would later become #9 House on Elm Street which they completed on January 14th, 1854 under guidance of Captain Hurd himself! The first storefront window in Mount Vernon opened on that date! It should be noted that many Americans found comfort and solace with their firearms during those difficult times - despite President Lincoln's calls for disarmament throughout much of America (and even beyond), many people simply could not bring themselves to let go of their weapons or give them up completely (despite some very brave individuals such as Samuel Colt). There are numerous stories about people who have helped keep America's firearms safe (both before and after the Civil War), including such luminaries as actor James Arness Sr., author Franklin D Roosevelt, Mayor Richard Meehan and Congressman Peter Roskam...the list goes on!
