After President Grant's death, many people moved into and live near Mount Vernon including Theodore Roosevelt who spent time there while governor of New York City; Franklin D. Roosevelt who moved into nearby Hyde Park; Eleanor Roosevelt who took up permanent residency when she married FDR in 1945; and current president Donald Trump who has frequently visited the property since its purchase by businessman Samuel Morse Sr., Jr., back in 1899 for $5 per acre (1/6th of a mile). In recent years, Lake Michigan water levels have lowered making access to much of the property difficult so some residents have resorted to using wells dug under their homes or building dams around their properties to generate power for their dwellings or gardenspace; however this approach presents environmental challenges as well as financial ones since these dwellings are typically situated close to water sources which can add up over time if not managed carefully.)

Lyon's tenure as justice of peace led to increased development in Mount Vernon and its surrounding area. By 1840, Mount Vernon had a population of 495 people and it became an incorporated village. In 1847, John Lewis founded Northwestern University in Chicago as one of its earliest Schools of Law and Political Science. Many prominent individuals were associated with Northwestern University during its early years including Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S Grant. It wasn't until after World War II that Mount Vernon regained some level of prominence due to several key events which occurred within its borders: The construction of Interstate 55 through much of their territory; large-scale farm-related endeavors taking place throughout the late 1960s; and most recently, changes brought about by Barack Obama when he was elected president in 2008
On July 14, 1818, the first United States Post Office was established at Mount Vernon by a group of soldiers under General Andrew Jackson. The post office operated until 1827. In 1831, the first steamboat to navigate the Mississippi River was launched from Orleans Island. In 1861, Union forces burned down Mount Vernon home of James K. Polk in order to prevent it from being used as a Confederate supply depot during the American Civil War. In 1865, Union forces landed at Newport Beach on California's Central Coast and burned down Mount Vernon as part of their offensive against the state's capital city of Sacramento. Mount Vernon saw more fires in its history: in 1905, 1915, 1933 and 1941. In 1948, Mount Vernon became part of Chicago with its current name; however, it retains some vestiges of its pre-Chicago history including an annual parade through downtown that begins and ends at Old National Bank Building on State Street
