Mount Vernon is a small town in Sullivan County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,533 at the 2010 census. The Mount Vernon Historic District includes over sixty buildings and two miles of hiking and biking trails. Mount Vernon is also home to the largest concentration of Italian Americans in Illinois. The town was founded by Nicholas Iacopo Martini in 1802 as part of the Northwest Territory claimed by both Great Britain and America after the Treaty of Paris ended the Napoleonic Wars. Martini named his new settlement for George Washington, who had fought for America during the War for Independence. When President James K. Polk sent troops to suppress a local Indian uprising in 1839, many residents fled to Mount Vernon before they were captured or killed. After American victory over Mexico at Buena Vista Creek, many settlers returned to Mount Vernon and it has remained an agricultural community ever since. The first school in Mount Vernon was established on May 12, 1814; it was called "the Academy." It operated until 1827 when a new school building was erected on present-day Park Street; that building still stands today as one of the most notable landmarks in Mount Vernon. In 1865, John Atherton donated land adjacent to his home on Elm Street for use as a public square; that square remains operational today as what is known as Atherton Square. In 1915, General Douglas MacArthur visited Mount Vernon while campaigning for president; he spent time at Atherton Square where he met with local farmers and discussed strategy with Ulysses S. Grant who served as his military advisor during World War II. In 1969, then-Mayor Harry Laughlin established a park within the boundaries of the original Academy School House which now houses Chamberlin Elementary School; that park is also known locally as "McArthur Park." In 1978–79 MtVernon's first high school class graduated from Southeastern High School located just east of town off Route 24 (now Old US Highway 36). That same year saw establishment of Mtvernon Junior College which offers associate degrees through its woodworking program along with certificates/ diplomas through its criminal justice/police academy program.; Today Mountain View Collegiate Institute offers undergraduate degree programs including business administration/commerce/marketing/financial management/sentencing science./legal studies along with graduate level programs such as counseling psychology/(clinical) or law enforcement officer education.( Police officer training only). Mount Vernon's economy primarily relies upon agriculture although there are some small businesses located here too such as manufactures jewelry store Beads & Strings run by Gayle Stroud(founder), grocery store Shoprite(director), health food store Wellness Connection(director), mechanic shop Midway Garage(owner), car dealership Plymouth Motorsports Inc.(owner) among others

Mount Vernon was founded in 1788 by George Washington and his wife, Martha Washington. The Mount Vernon property is located in Illinois, about 30 miles north of Chicago. Mount Vernon is one of the most important historical sites in the United States. It is a National Historic Landmark and is home to many president and first ladies from both American presidents (George Washington, James K. Polk, Franklin D. Roosevelt) and British prime ministers (George V, Neville Chamberlain). The first settler at Mount Vernon was Captain John Smith who arrived in 1787 with his family. Other early settlers included Moses Greenough, Increase Mifflin, John Shaw Sr., Ebenezer Brownell, Nicholas Johnson Jr., Solomon Northup and others. Many of these people were original owners of the land that now makes up Mount Vernon. In 1802, President George Washington purchased the property from Nicholas Johnson Jr.. The land was divided into parcels and given to various families until it became part of the federal government's Springfield Township on March 3rd, 1827. Over time more than 100 people lived at or near Mount Vernon including presidents such as Ulysses S Grant and Woodrow Wilson; First Ladies like Martha Washington; governors like Richard Muhlenberg; Members of Congress; military commanders including General Winfield Scott; Catholic nuns who ran a school on the grounds; slaves who worked on plantations nearby; as well as many other interesting individuals associated with American history during its formative years. After President Lincoln's assassination in 1865, most of what remained at Mount Vernon passed out hands among surviving heirs until it finally came into private ownership by Mrs. Alice Pauline Robinson in 1916-17 pending final approvals for preservation by the War Relocation Authority under then-Secretary Henry Wallace's administration which eventually approved restoration works beginning in 1936-37 led by landscape architect Raymond Hood followed by an overall renovation program that continues today under current management overseen by Douglas Feulner
The original Mount Vernon, Illinois home of George Washington and his family, was built in 1788. It was the first permanent structure in what is now Mount Vernon Township. The home served as Washington's headquarters for a time before he moved to his more famous White House in Virginia.
