In 1824, Mount Vernon, Illinois was founded by General James Wilkinson and his wife. The town was named in honor of George Washington, the first United States president. In 1828, Wilkinson donated land to the city for a public square and built the first school in Mount Vernon. In 1832, Mount Vernon became a Township. In 1865, the Township of Mount Vernon changed its name to Village of Mount Vernon. On May 15th of that year, the village charter was adopted and it began to operate as an independent municipality with its own government andisdiction over all aspects of municipal life including housing, education, fire protection and more. On October 1st 1870 residents voted to incorporation as a City under Mayor Samuel Aughton. By 1898 when Chicago annexed the Village into itscity limits (the first time this had ever happened), Mayor John Daley ordered that all records from the original Village be destroyed so that Chicago could build a new city without any acknowledgement or connection to what had once been calledMount Vernon. Today only about 10-15 buildings remain from whenMount Vernon was an active community with homes for many people including farmers who raised livestock on their properties as well as merchants doing business out of their shops on Main Street which still stands today having been greatly renovated in recent years by local companies like Potawatomi Hills Apartment Homes who are now making use of some of the oldest brick sidewalks found anywhere in Chicagoland!

Mount Vernon is named after George Washington's home on Virginia Point in Rockville Centre, Maryland. George Washington and his family spent time there during their stay in 1799-1800 as guests of the Potomac Company. The first permanent settler in Mount Vernon was James Martin who arrived about 1800. He built a cabin on the site that still stands today. In 1821, Isaac McCoy settled here and laid out a town block which still stands today near where Main Street meets Capitol Road. A post office was established at Mount Vernon in 1825 and remained in operation until it closed in 1901. In 1827, John Potter set up shop here as a blacksmithsmiths business with two partners Abe Chapman and John Snydering running it side by side for several years before Potter sold to Joseph Gage who ran it until 1870 when it was purchased by Amos Kendall Jr.. Kendall renamed it Mount Vernon Village after himself and his wife Sarah Wright Sellers who served as its first female mayor from 1885 to 1889 The village became an incorporated municipality on November 3, 1896 following the merger of four nearby villages: Arlington Heights (1892), IrvingPark (1894), South Holland (1901) and Villa Park (1904). On December 15th 1915, the last early 20th century grocery store opened its doors at 9 North Adams Street when Havelock Brothers moved into what would become their final house there followed by Grocery Outlet Incorporated which operated from 1916-1967 including 4 locations inside City Hall before closing down because of renewed competition from larger stores within city limits On July 1st 1977 all residents of Mount Vernon Village merged into Arlington Heights Township with same boundaries making Mount Vernon one Municipality once again Although there are continuing unofficial references to "Mount Vernon" being privately owned by some residents until recently these activities have not been confirmed or refuted
