After Washington's death in 1799, his widow Martha Custis assumed control over Mount Vernon and continued construction on President George Washington Park until her death in 1881; this left Mount Vernon continuing as an important tourist destination for many years after her death. The Washington family used their position as landowners and politicians to improve Mount Vernon and make it a fashionable home for officials, diplomats, and others in the early 1800s. In 1847, President James K. Polk sent military forces to quash a rebellion on Mount Vernon by Illinois farmers. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Union General Ulysses S. Grant used Mount Vernon as a headquarters while fighting in Georgia. After the war ended, General Robert E. Lee stored munitions at Mount Vernon until he could move them to Richmond in 1863. Mount Vernon has been owned by different families ever since: In 1923, John Dickson Crawford donated all of his holdings tothe University of Michigan; in 1948 (following World War II), Harry Smith gave his entire estate to Harvard University; in 1957 (following enactment of the National Security Act), Edwin Wilson donated part of his holdings to Yale University; in 1978 (following passage of Title IX of Education Amendments), Fred Vail donated all his holdings (including six estates) to Columbia University; and finally in 2001 (after being acquired by Microsoft) Paul Mellon gifted all his remaining properties—including two plantations—to Princeton University
