Mount Prospect is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 47,087 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest city in Illinois and the second-largest in Cook County after Chicago. The metropolitan area of Mount Prospect includes all of Cook County and parts of DuPage, Kane, Lake, and McHenry counties. The first Europeans to visit what is now Mount Prospect were led by Captain John Smith on his journey from Jamestown to the Northwest Indian trade route in early 1607. He named the peak "Mount Prospect" because he thought it might be an advantageous location for a trading post. A small community was started near the present day intersection of State Route 15 and US Highway 71 (now I-55) in 1869 as part of a plan to develop land north of Chicago that had been purchased by Major James Wirtz from Native Americans. However, development did not take off until after World War II when automobile traffic increased and people began commuting to jobs in downtown Chicago or other large cities. Today's Mount Prospect came into being as a result of this growth. In 1893, local entrepreneur George Pullen bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) east of wherepresent-day Mount Prospect High School stands on property he had bought from David Dixon for $1 per acre (0.32 km²). Pullen developed what would become known as Pullen's Corners Shopping District which included more than 20 stores and several restaurants before it closed its doors for good in 1978 due to economic recession conditions combined with stricter zoning laws at the time%. In addition, Pullen also built one of few municipally owned water systems west of Chicago during this time period - serving both his shopping district and much larger portions of suburban Cook County beyond it until 1979 when those services were transferred back to City Hall hands within Mayor Richard Moseley's first term as mayor beginning with his second term starting in 1992 following enactment of state law granting municipalities such as Mt prospect some degree cf control over their own finances.. With pullen's death in 1918 - most notably due to pneumonia brought about by bad air quality emanating from an old oil refinery nearby - ownership passed through various families until it was sold 25 years later to developer Harry Wexler who converted it into what is now known as Wexler Park Southwestern Hotel & Casino which opened its doors on December 14th 1954.. During World War II many civilian workers served aboard Navy ships moored offshore along IL' shorelines providing essential labor including men manning fireboats while war supplies arrived; today many veterans still live within easy reach thanks largely to Naval Reserve Base Camporeale located just minutes away.. Some residents have continued working at local businesses even after retirement however most residents today enjoy living close enoughto family but far enough away so they can get involved with their community without ever having too much interaction with each other...Today Mount Prospect continues its rapid growth trajectory despite fierce competition throughout much wider Chicagoland region...

Mount Prospect, Ill., is a small city in the Chicago metropolitan area. The population was 20,707 at the 2010 census. It has been home to European settlers since 1848. Mount Prospect is part of Cook County. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Chicago were French traders and missionaries who founded La Salle's Village on the border of present-day Mount Prospect and Skokie on December 14, 1848. Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette had also arrived there earlier that year with his band of explorers looking for a route to California. On November 6, 1849, the village's first post office opened with six mail bags from La Salle's group including two bottles of wine as prizes. In 1850, when Illinois became a state, Mount Prospect became part of Rockford Township where it still stands today as one of its most important commercial and industrial areas. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General James Longstreet passed through Rockford on his way southward to battle Robert Ewell at Gettysburg; he stopped at Mount Prospect for dinner before continuing on his journey. As a result of this visit by General Longstreet and others associated withthe war in Illinois (such as officers from Fort Dearborn), many new residents moved into what would become Mount Prospect during this time period (e.g., John Witherspoon). A post office was established at Mount Prospect on March 8, 1865; it was discontinued operation two years later because there were no letters received from thence! The last letter sent from Mount Pulpect was dated January 9th 1870; three days later an express wagon carrying mail reached Mtprospect after driving overland 113 miles! A general store operated at 1–2W Adams St until May 1912 when it burned down but not before leaving behind some very beautiful Merchants Mercantile building which still stands today in front of City Hall). After General Grant withdrew Ulysses S Grant's army from Chicago along with most other Union forces near Vandalia in Algonquin township October 15th 1863 - all troops must leave their equipment unloading & march back east so ammunition could be brought up & stored - local businesses deserted Sherman’s forces & started packing up their goods few weeks leading up to Christmas... About 150 business men met outside City hall Nov 25th 1863 under trees to start packing up their belongings only about 50 men made it out alive thru snow Storm celery force Jan 3rd 1865 drove off cattle thieves just east side street between railroad tracks & Post Road--moved closer to Settlers House [now] First Congregational Church]. This event helped motivate several lessors within town “to get organized” and soon commenced construction on what would become known as First Congregational Church which opened its doors January 3rd 1865 right next door to where cattle thief road crossed Railroad Tracks now occupied by Settlers House
