One of the first target holders in Mount Prospect, Illinois was the John S. and James L. Knight Rifle Range which opened in 1892. The range was located at 827 Wabash Avenue and it served as a training ground for rifle enthusiasts throughout the early 20th century. In 1916, the Chicago Rifles Armory opened its doors and became one of the first gun ranges in America to offer indoor shooting facilities for civilians. It continued to serve as a training ground until 1976 when it closed its doors due to lack of patronage. The Chicago Rifles Armory building still stands today and is used as offices by local business owners.
Mount Prospect is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,257 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Mount Prospect was Col. John Chivington who arrived in 1792 and named it after his friend, Sir George Chivington, 1st Baronet of Walthamstow. He sold some land to the Kaskaskia Company and then developed it into a village with a market square and five-story buildings that still stand today. In 1847, when the Missouri Compromise was ratified and Illinois became a state, Mount Prospect's status as an unincorporated community changed from township to city by act of the Illinois General Assembly. In 1856–57, when Chicago was founded as the capital of Illinois and Mount Prospect became its second city limits – it remained an unincorporated community until 1906 when it became one of the fifty-six wards within Chicago governance under Mayor John Hynes'. Today Mount Prospect has many active businesses including several large grocery stores such as Kroger and Safeway; numerous restaurants like Olive Garden and Bennigan's; two hospitals (Cook County Hospital on North Avenue near Hare Krishna Temple) which are both considered top-tier medical centers; four high schools (West Side High School, Resurrection Catholic High School Annex #2), three middle schools (Mount Prospect IntermediateSchool District No 2), two libraries (the Community Library System’s Park Plaza Branch located on State Street just east of State Street next to Medved Health Sciences Center), one post office with ZIP code 60534 and one police department - all operated by Cook County government through their municipally run departments described below: The City Council also operates public works departments including Streetscape/Paving & Roadside Maintenance; Parks & Recreation; Water & Sewerage Services/Maintenance/Environmental Control; Streetspacing Operations; Zoning Appeals Committee Membership - appointed by Mayor Hynes - reviews zoning changes for approval by City Council before they become effective Mount Prospect also has its own fire department which serves primarily the city limits but does have jurisdiction over portions of Aurora Heights to the northwesterly side of Lake View Cemetery

The garrison served as a model for many Ulysses S Grant’s later military campaigns against Native Americans and southern plantation owners. After the war, Mount Prospect saw heavy growth as businesses reopened and workers from nearby towns started moving into the area to fill up jobs at Fort Dearborn or elsewhere in Chicago. During these years,Mount prospect also experienced some significant growth within its own borders: On July 1st 1888,the Swenzer family moved from nearby Waukegan into what is now part of Mount Prospect; on October 5th 1895,thefirstelectriclightbulbwasinstalledinMount prospect; on May 3rd 1899,a wagon road was opened between MtprospectandWauconda which helped spur economic development; finally on November 15th 1903 traffic along Route 66 reached Mtprospectforthe first time
The first white people to live in the area that is now Mount Prospect were pioneers, who traveled up the Mississippi River in 1814. The town of Racine was founded by these early settlers and became a center for trade and culture. In 1835, Congress passed the Act of August 29, which created a new county within Cook County named after General David Dixon. This act also provided for the creation of schools in this area and helped to spur development. In 1846, two years after Congress had designated Mount Prospect as a post office, Nathan Bedford Forrest purchased land east of present-day Mount Prospect Avenue from James Caldwell for $2,000. Forrest began construction on his plantation near present-day Illinois Central Station. By 1865, he had acquired approximately half of what is now Chicago Heights and built an impressive home there called Prairie View A&M College (later Prairie View University). By 1870, Forrest had acquired all of present-day Mount Prospect and established himself as one ofChicago's most influential men. He was instrumental in helping to create Chicago's downtown business district and played an important role in developing the city's infrastructure such as its water system and streetcar system.
