Mount Prospect is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 38,044 at the 2010 census. It is the sixth-largest city in Kane County and the third-largest city in Illinois. The downtown area of Mount Prospect is home to many high-end retailers such as Sears, Macy's, and J.C. Penney. Additionally, the University of Missouri–Kansas City (UMKC) is located in Mount Prospect proper as well as several smaller colleges and universities within walking distance including Northwestern Illinois University and Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The early history of Mount Prospect can be traced back to 1847 when two brothers founded a farmstead called “Mount Hope” east of town on what is now State Route 52 near present day Springfield Township. The first settler was James Hargrave who arrived with his family from Connecticut around this time and built a cabin on what is now Old Red Mill Road. In 1852 Peter Fallis bought “Mount Hope” from James Hargrave for $1 cash which at that time was an enormous amount of money given its location close to Springfield township boundaries but not too far from where Chicago would be established two years later by influx of immigrant arrivals from Hungary during the 1840s known as “The Great Migration” led by Count Franz Joseph de Weyer who had come ashore at Quincy Harbor aboard USS Constitution under Ulysses S Grant on April 12th 1846 after leading Hungarian troops into battle against Mexican forces at Buena Vista Creek outside Mexico City just days before America gained independence from Great Britain! After purchasing land north of present day North Avenue in what would become parts of Mt Prospect Township he began building a house which still stands today on Old Red Mill Road across from his original cabin: it became known as South Side House! In 1865 John Wirthman purchased part of South Side House which became known as West Side House following purchase by John Wirthman’s son Julius Wirthman who later served as Mayor of Mt Greenwood Village (now Elmhurst), IL during World War II! A local landmark still standing today that marks Julius Wirthman’s ownership date is Schmidt’s Hardware located adjacent to current day Roosevelt Elementary School: Schmidt’s Hardware originally sold groceries direct to customers door until 1974 when they transitioned into an online store! When Obama graduated college he moved out west to Washington D C where he became President leaving behind his wife Michelle & daughters Malia & Sasha! Barack Obama once again returned home to support his kids while living temporarily with them while he ran for office representing Mt Greenwood Village (now Elmhurst), IL once again becoming Mayor during his second term And finally being impeached for lying about having been born outside America prior to running for office… And thus another chapter concludes our story about one very active community here in Kane County – Mt Prospect!

Mount Prospect was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,699 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Mount Prospect was John Hargrave in 1818. In 1830, Isaac Sears bought 1/4 acre (0.24 km2) of land from James Kenedy and erected a log cabin there. By 1840, Mount Prospect had two families, ten households, and one schoolhouse. A post office had been established there in 1846 as Mount Prospect Post Office; it closed on March 7th of that year due to postal reform which made it an open letter station with no stamps available for purchase or use. In 1860, the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill authorizing the creation of townships within Cook County; Mount Prospect Township was organized on December 12th of that year with 1 mile (1 kilometer) square boundaries and a population of 30 residents. The first mayor was Nathan Prentice; the first Selectman were John Fenton and Asahel Morse. Because most settlers were farmers who raised corn and other crops rather than miners and lumberjacks like many other communities set up around Lake Michigan during this time period, few structures remain from this early period in town's history- only one building still standing today- the old courthouse annexe which served as both municipal hall and law library until it burned down in 1922 while serving as an abandoned convent for some nuns living locally at that time. A post office remained at Mount Prospect until 1868 when it opened at Decatur just north of present day Skokie because Decatur had larger facilities then either Mt prospect or Cicero combined.. In 1870–71 when Mt prospect incorporated as a village all active services were centralized here including schools nurses etc
In 1847, the first white settlement in Mount Prospect was founded by Captain James K. Polk and his family. The city was named after him and his wife, Lucy Arkansaw Polk. The population of Mount Prospect grew quickly from its earliest days as a small farming community to over 10,000 by 1855. In that year, the city became an incorporated town and began to develop into a major center for trade and commerce in the region. Mount Prospect experienced rapid growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s as a result of its commercial importance and its location on the edge of Illinois' large agricultural area. The city's prosperity continued until the Great Depression hit in 1929, causing it to lose much of its economic clout. However, since then, Mount Prospect has slowly regained some of its lost popularity as a result of its cultural attractions and modern infrastructure.
