Mount Prospect, Illinois is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois. The population of Mount Prospect was 3,902 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most rural areas in Kane County and has a large agricultural sector. The community was founded by Methodists in 1848 and became an incorporated village in 1887. In 1951, Mount Prospect merged with neighboring Westmont to form the current town. Mount Prospect is named after John Crain, who settled there in 1818. Crain had come from Ohio and been active as a Methodist preacher before moving to Pike County, Indiana. He decided to move westward and found a place called Mount Prospect on the Sangamon River near present-day Chicago. At first few people lived there because the land was too dry for farming; but over time settlers arrived and began building homes. By 1890, when the US Census counted Mount Prospect’s population for the first time, it had grown to 997 people. The early history of Mount Green or “Mt." Gilead" is shrouded in mystery but we do know that it occupied what is now part of Mt." Gilead", Kane County IL from about 1800 AD until about 1870 when white settlement started There are references to "Mt." Green" as early as 1792 when Joseph Cook filed his plat for “Old Indian Mound” which he called "Gilead". Cook's plat included 2 1/2 miles east of present day Mt." Gilead" (now known as corner lot #6) & lots seven & eight south side road leading west from that site on Old Indian Mound Purchased by George Naylor January 8th 1792 lays claim to all said lands lying between livery stable lot No 5 east of Joliet Road North & old surveyed line joining those properties thence northward extending along river bank To wit: Beginning at a point where this road meets said stream on its left side finding its source near junction of that road with School House Road Being two rods wide at least measured from fork of said road opposite company store mentioned above Which property lay within 4 rods line Feet width feet Depth feet From stream bed above water mark To premises aforementioned Further importation thereof would amountTo One Hundred Dollars per annum And three year term patent granted therefore dated Jan 25th 1812 nearly 50 years ago Claimant thereto beingJoseph Cook
Mount Prospect was a small town in the eastern United States when it was first settled. It was founded in 1811 by a group of English settlers and named for Mount Prospect, in England. The community grew rapidly and soon became an important early fur-trading center in the area. In 1825, Mount Prospect joined the Illinois Territory and continued to grow rapidly. By 1830, it had become a town with a population of over 1,000 people. In 1835, the town voted to secede from Illinois and form its own country independent of both the United States and Great Britain. The secession effort failed but the town continued to grow as an agricultural center until its incorporation into Chicago in 1903.
