Mount Prospect is a small, unincorporated community in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 3,005 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Mount Prospect was John Burges who arrived in 1836. He and his family were the only residents of the town until 1854 when Isaac Dunham moved there from Palatine, Illinois. In 1862, David Pease settled there and became one of the most prominent men in Mount Prospect. His home still stands on High Street today and is a property museum. This community had its beginnings as a military post during World War I which served as an important training ground for American forces during that time period. During World War II, Mount Prospect hosted an airbase used by the United States Air Force which gave it some importance within the community because it was near major cities such as Chicago and Milwaukee where people could get their air service. 1st Lt.-Colonel James Fenton (Ret.) who later founded JFET fame resided here from 1961-1973 when he commanded USAF Tactical Air Command's 5th Wing at Turner Field AFB Georgia until his retirement after over 50 years of service including tours at Ramstein AB Germany where he also served as Commander USAFE Europe; Offutt AFB Nebraska; Springfield AFB Missouri; lordstown NJ before retiring to this location Feb 1973.. Today's shopping mall located adjacent to high school provides employment opportunities for many local residents while other businesses provide services such as health care, accounting and real estate services to those within walking distance or via phone or internet connection

Mount Prospect, Illinois is a village in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 10,742 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was organized on November 1, 1864 from parts of Westchester and Palatine counties. When the railroad came through town in 1868, it increased population growth by attracting people to work on the tracks. Settlement began near the junction of the Chicago and North Western Railway (later Union Pacific Railroad) and Rock Island Railroad, which led to Mount Prospect's name being used as both a place name for a bend in the river and for an early cotton gin located thereabouts. In 1870–71, Mount Prospect built its first schoolhouse; this building still stands today as part of Park View Elementary School. In 1879–80, Mount Prospect erected its first courthouse—still in use today as District Court Building 2nd Floor—and also built a jail cell for district attorney George Hennepin. A new post office was established at Mount Prospect on December 6th, 1888; it remained operational until 1963 when it was replaced by Post Office Plaza across State Street from Park View Elementary School. In 1916–17, after World War I ended with Germany's surrender,[2] many soldiers who had fought in Europe returned home to their homes in America and decided to settle down wherever they were called home: Mount Prospect became one such community with over 1,000 residents.[3] In 1920,[4] following annexation by Cook County,[5][6] Mount Prospect's business districts were consolidated into what is now Loop Business District No 7 (LBDL). On May 5th 1928,[7] Wabash Electric Railway Station opened just south of present-day Main Street (now Lincoln Avenue).[8][9][10][11][12], helping fuel economic development northward along Milwaukee Avenue starting around that time[13]. By 1931[14], all businesses had closed within town limits:[15],[16],[17],[18]; however due to nearby manufacturing plants operated by Wabash Electric Railway Company some remnants remain today including Olde Town Hall (built about 1865)[19], First National Bank building (1889), Hennepin Alley restaurant complex (1920s), Masonic Lodge #1 temple & associated structures [20], Wabash electric locomotive plant No 2 & associated equipment [21], Mt prospect Baptist Church Complex gymnasium / auditorium 1912-1971 [22],[23]), Niles High School 1918-1968 [24],[25], Soo Line Depot 1923-2006 & woodcarriage depot 1924-[26])--all remaining evidence testifying to past commercial activity within town limits during late 19th century/early 20th century Pioneer Period Residents include Elisha Kapp c1800?-c1900?, Amos Stowe 1800s?, John Stevens 1830s?, James Fenton 1840s?
Mount Prospect was founded in 1847 as a small community of farmers and their families on the east bank of the Des Plaines River. The town grew rapidly, reaching its peak in the early 1860s when it had over 1,000 residents. However, by the late 1860s Mount Prospect had begun to decline due to a combination of factors including increased competition from larger towns on the west side of the river, economic instability caused by an agricultural depression, and increasing immigration from Eastern Europe. In 1886, Mount Prospect was abandoned completely and its citizens relocated to nearby Wheaton.
