Mount Prospect was one of the first settlements in what is now Illinois. The site of present-day Mount Prospect was first occupied by a Mennonite community in 1827. The community grew and constructed a log cabin on the hilltop, which they called "Mountain View." A sawmill soon followed, and eventually the town became an important center for lumbering and farming in the Upper Midwest. In 1881, during the American Civil War, Mount Prospect's residents sided with the Union side. After the war, many of Mount Prospect's businesses closed, but some continued to operate until after World War II. Today, Mount Prospect is a small town with a population of around 100 people.
