At that time, a man named John Fetterman started manufacturing agricultural tools in his home on the north side of Mount Prospect. The company grew quickly and by 1874, Fetterman had outgrown his home and moved to a larger facility on the south side of town. At this point, the company was known as Huntsville Tool Works. In 1912, John Crouch purchased the Huntsville Tool Works from John Fetterman. Under Crouch’s ownership, the company began producing industrial tools under the name of Crouch Tool Company. Over time, the company became well-known for its quality products and impressive customer service. In 1953, Crouch passed away and his son Harry took over management of the business. During Harry Crouch’s tenure, technological advancements led to new product lines such as power hammers and screwdrivers. In 1974, Harry passed away and his son Dan ran the business until 1984 when it was taken over by George Wafer Jr., who continues to run it today as an family-owned business. Today, Huntsville Tool Works is one of Illinois’ most respected companies with a legacy that spans many years. Mount Prospect is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 31,971 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in the Illinois suburbs of Chicago. Mount Prospect is one of five cities that make up the Chicago metropolitan area. The other four are Bridgeview, Elmhurst, Gurnee and Winnetka. The first European settlers in what is now Mount Prospect were French traders and fur-seekers who came to Lake Michigan in 1763 for trade purposes and as part of a larger effort by France to control the Great Lakes region. By 1800, there were more than 100 Native American nations living on or near the Great Lakes Basin; however, only a few hundred white people lived permanently in those areas at any given time because of hostility from indigenous peoples and danger from British forces occupying North America during the 18th century. In 1825, General James K. Polk moved his army through central Illinois during an attempt to invade Indiana Territory under Ulysses S. Grant; after crossing into Iowa Territory he turned south and marched through Mount Prospect toward Vandalia (now Springfield), where he stopped on December 12 to rest his troops before continuing on January 1st across the state line into Indiana Territory. Mount Prospect is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Mount Prospect was founded on November 6, 1848 by Elijah Payson and his wife Rebecca Dearborn. The original site was a small cove near the current location of Mount Prospect Park. In 1854, Payson donated land to build a school and post office. A year later, he also donated land for a courthouse and jail. On May 3, 1861, Mount Prospect became one of the townships in Cook County when it was organized from portions of Deerfield Township and North Riverside Township. In 1870–71, settlers began to arrive in what is now Mount Prospect; these were primarily farmers who had come from eastern Illinois or Indiana Territory. By 1860–61, there were around 100 people living in Mount Pleasant township and about 150 people living in Mount Prospect township plus scattered outposts here and there within both townships. By 1870–71 there were also around 10 businesses operating in town center including three stores (the first two beingowned by Elijah Payson & his son Amos) as well as several blacksmiths (including John Marshall) who did most of their work outside of town limits because they could not get permits to operate inside the white-majority townships. Eventually only two blacksmiths operated within town limits—John Marshall and William Hinton— while all other business owners were located outside of town limits across Deerfield Township or north Riverside Township where permits were easier to obtain due to increasing numbers of white residents moving into those areas during this time period. The first school opened in 1850 at an old log cabin on Westcott Avenue which served grades 1-8 before being moved to its current location on South Shore Drive in 1855 after becoming too small for students inside the older White Settlement alone (which continued until 1915). However even before that schools serving grades K-4 existed; one such school was opened on East Prairie Road just east of present day Eisenhower Parkway some time before September 8th – October 25th 1850 by Rev Solomon Maurice with pupils grades 5-7 attending while others attended either Rock Island Academy or Northern Illinois Female Seminary depending upon family circumstances at the time (maintained until 1912). Additionally Methodist missionaries had been proselytizing throughout upper northern Ireland starting around 1840 visiting various villages/settlements along streams wherever they found groups available so early Methodists presence can be assumed among earliest arrivals hereabouts; this has led some historians[who?]to consider MtP prospectively Irish rather than American as suggested previously… despite highest percentages ever reported for Irish immigrants overall [in Cook county], none have managed to document any specific connection between MtP prospectivelyIrish origin & residence hereabouts prior to 1840″ As early as 1847 local pioneer Amasa Dearborn had stated that she would like “a little piece”of land where her husband could plant crops “on some high ground near us” If possible she desired something nearer Chicago but no definite plans emerged until after her death in 1865 when Elijah Payson decided to gift over 640 acres surrounding what is now known as Hermitage Park which became home for many years later including Benjamin Franklin Davenport himself who resided there from 1893 until his death largely due lack thereof suitable alternatives elsewhere given rapidly growing city growth then concurrent inflationary pressures amidst great public pressure him& others faced regarding Rapid Fire Destruction wreaking havoc thruout entire community google mayday1849
The first white settlers in the area were Nathan Cook and his group of farmers who arrived in 1773. The town was named for Mount Prospect, a mountain near Chicago that is still seen as a landmark today. Cook's farmstead was the first to be built in what is now Mount Prospect Township. Cook also donated land to the township, making it one of its earliest residents. Mount Prospect remained an agricultural community until the early 1900s when industry began to take hold in the town. Manufacturing included dyeing and printing products, leather tanning, lumber production, and a few small businesses that manufactured radios and other electronics equipment. In 1955, Mount Prospect became part of Chicago when it was merged into the city. Today, Mount Prospect is home to a number of small businesses as well as several schools including Roosevelt High School and Montrose Elementary School which are both located within walking distance of each other. The town continues to enjoy popularity due to its scenic location as well as its close proximity to major cities like Chicago and Illinois City.
