Mount Prospect is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was founded on November 3, 1836 by Dr. Alexander Campbell and his wife Eliza Thomson as a small community east of Chicago on the western edge of what is now Mount Prospect Park. By 1840, it had grown to about 1,000 people and had taken up residence in three villages: Émigré Village (now Cicero), Prospect Heights, and North Side. On May 10, 1847 a grant from United States President James K. Polk made Mount Prospect a town under the jurisdiction of the new county of Kane. In 1896 Mount Prospect became one of eighteen communities in Cook County that were consolidated with neighboring Hyde Park to form the city of Chicago; it remained an agricultural center until suburbanization began in the early 21st century and its manufacturing sectors declined during that time. In recent years there has been discussion among some residents about whether or not to re-open their original businesses within Mount Prospect itself or move them elsewhere within Cook County's current economic borders where they could compete more effectively against other smaller towns and villages throughout Illinois

Frick and James Wickersham and named for General George Washington Mount Pleasant on the nearby Point Pleasant Ridge. The city was incorporated on December 15, 1867, from parts of Racine and West Allis. In 1907 it annexed part of La Salle Township. On February 17, 1916 the City Council voted to annex all of Dodgeville Township due to growing grain production there and lack of industrial space in Mount Prospect
