Mount Prospect is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 101,812 as of the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Chicago after Chicago Heights. The first European settlers in what is now Mount Prospect were French Canadian fur traders and missionaries who arrived in 1795. They founded the town on land they had purchased from the Potawatomi people east of Lake Michigan and named it for Pierre-Charles de Montmorency, 1st Duke of Chartres. The first buildings were log cabins built by early settlers near the current location of Mount Prospect High School. In 1827, Abraham Lincoln was born here while living with his parents on a farm south of the city limits then known as “Lincoln’s Prairie” (now Morgan Park). He attended local schools before moving to Mt. Prospect in 1832 to attend an academy there where he learned about politics and lawmaking. In 1835 he became a member of the Illinois House Of Representatives from this district; later that year he served as state superintendent of education for five years under Governor John Floyd (1836–39). Lincoln returned to Mt. Prospect in 1841 and resumed his seat in the legislature until his death four years later at age 36 from smallpox contracted while serving as personal secretary to President James Buchanan during his brief term (1861–65). At Lincoln's funeral service at Trinity Church—the only public one ever given here—a crowd estimated 300,000 people lined up along State Street between Market Square and Western Avenue to pay their respects including many Soldiers' & Sailors' Monument guards detailed for that purpose by General David Hunter who supervised strategy during America's Civil War efforts from Illinois headquarters at Springfield Armory (). Mount Prospect grew rapidly following its incorporation as a municipality on December 12, 1870. In 1880 it had a population of 397 residents; within 10 years it reached 621 residents, making it one of Cook County's fastest-growing municipalities (). By 1909 its population had grown to 914 inhabitants; within 25 years it reached 1,035 inhabitants and became one of Chicago's "inner cities". Economic development followed: Mount Prospect began manufacturing goods such as textiles and shoes early on but soon diversified into other businesses such as transportation services and real estate development which led to increased economic prosperity through several waves OF mass layoffs throughout 1990s – 2000s due largely to global recession; however some new businesses have since started up thanks [to] South Side/West Side revitalization effort spearheaded by Mayor Rahm Emanuel

In 1870, Mount Prospect annexed neighboring settlements of La Grange and Clarendon Heights which helped increase its population to over 10,000 people by 1880. By 1910, Mount Prospect had become one of the most advanced cities in Illinois with over 100 high-rise apartment buildings and several department stores including Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Co., Macy's Inc., Guggenheim Museum And His Son Store
Mount Prospect was founded in 1814 by the Illinois Company, a group of investors led by John F. Richardson. The company built a gristmill and other mills to produce flour for the Illinois market. The town grew quickly, and in 1827 it became the county seat of Cook County. Mount Prospect prospered until the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 destroyed most of the town and killed many people. Reconstruction began in Mount Prospect, but progress was slow because of lack of funding. In 1893, the city leased property from the United States government to develop its water system. By 1912, Mount Prospect had become one of Chicago's largest streetscapes with nearly 200 buildings on more than 1,000 acres (400 hectares).
