It is the third most populous city in Illinois and the second most populous in Chicago. Mount Prospect was founded by settlers from New England in 1837. The first post office opened in 1838. The city has grown rapidly since its founding, becoming one of the 12 largest cities in Illinois by 1990. In 2008, Mount Prospect was named one of "The City Beautiful" properties by Forbes magazine. Located on a hill overlooking downtown Chicago, Mount Prospect soon became known for its fine architecture and prestigious colleges and universities as well as its beautiful setting on rolling hills outside of Chicago's Loop area. The city also boasted industry including particular emphasis on textiles and food processing until 1975; however over recent years mount prospect has become more known for its arts scene with several major theaters and museums opening up shop there such as the Art Institute of Chicago which moved to Mtprospect from a previous location in West Side town of Edgewater[1] The early pioneers who founded Mount Prospect were primarily farmers who had come down from Massachusetts seeking new land to farm after the American Revolution. By 1837 they had gathered around a small log cabin that would later be called “the Woods Hole Cabin” (later renamed “Mount Prospect”). A few months later they set off across country on horseback headed for what would be their new home – an area that now includes parts of Northwest Indiana and Michigan Territory along with much of northeastern Illinois – all looking for open land to settle after the Great Lakes region became part of America following independence from Great Britain (see Pioneer Settlement). A map made up shortly after their arrival shows that many people were already living near where modern day Mount Prospect sits today: about three-quarters of this group lived east or northeast of present day Waukegan Road/Route 56 though some did live west or northwest corneringSE corner Government Street/Old Erie Road).[2] However, it wasn't until 1840 when John Prentice built his sawmill just southwest of modern day 88th Street/Highway 61 that began commercial production along what is now Main Street serving both local farmers and travelers on horseback going intoChicago.[3] This mill helped create what are now many jobs throughout early Mount Proctor: wagonmaker Nathaniel Bacon counted among his customers,[4][5] while grist miller Samuel Morse added flour to wagons coming into town during the 1830s thanks to right-of-way granted by then Governor Peabody Tollroad Company president Nathan Bedford Forrest Jr., son-in-law of Jacksonian hero Andrew Johnson Just east off current Route 56 stands what may have been America's first restaurant[6]: Fenton House opened its doors May 15th 1792 operated by Capt John Fenton under contract with General George Washington! Of note nearby is Stroudsburg Arsenal Museum which preserves artillery from Revolutionary War days
