Mount Prospect is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 71,844 at the 2010 census. As of the 2016 American Community Survey, the city had a population of 73,521. The community was founded in 1847 by John A. Logan and others as a farmstead on what is now the north side of Chicago Avenue between State Street and Randolph Road. It became a town in 1857 and was named for William Augustus Mount Prospect (1784-1850), an Illinois congressman from Aurora Township who also served as mayor of Chicago from 1865 to 1870 and again from 1872 to 1875. Mount Prospect's rich agricultural history made it one of the most important towns in Cook County during the 19th century. The first post office opened in Mount Prospect on November 1, 1847; it closed on October 15, 1850 due to mail thefts by Ottawa volunteers working for General James K. Polk's war effort against Mexico. The first store within Mount Prospect was built on May 10, 1850 by George Wirtz with his brother Julius Wirtz as co-owner; it closed because of lack of business after only six months. A second store opened on September 2nd next door to the first; this store operated until December 16th 1860 due to concerns over fire risk caused by nearby sawmills that were then operating continuously without interruption for fifty years! In 1862–1863, work began on a new road leading northeast from Chicago into Indiana Territory; this road became known as "the Great Western Railway" because it connected Chicago with Indianapolis through Uniontown and Westfield Junction (now Elkhart County). In 1865–1866, when President Andrew Johnson nominated Judge David Davis to be Associate Justice on the U.S Supreme Court – Davis' home state – Mount Prospect voted not to seat him because he did not reside there (Davis later moved into Washington D.C.). On February 17th 1870 Senator Daniel Webster visited Mount Prospect during his nationally televised presidential campaign stop at Amherst College; Webster declared that if reelected he would "…establish communication between these two great sections which have been so long disconnected." On April 12th 1870 local businesses decided they would no longer accept mails coming into or leaving their town since they could no longer afford postage rates being set at 6¢ per letter when compared to Baltimore's rate of 20¢ per letter – effective July 1st 1870! A new post office called "Mount Pleasant" opened northwest of downtown MtP soon afterwards but quickly failed due to high postage costs associated with serving such an isolated town surrounded only by unbroken forested countryside! On January 5th 1888 "Shanty Town" Post Office opened just eastof downtown MtP serving all those living west of Interstate 80 including what are now Wheeling & Summit counties although Shanty Town never got its own ZIP code! In 1912 Shanty Town merged into newly formed village called Highland Park which continues today

Mount Prospect is a small city in the northern Illinois town of Mount Prospect, about 25 miles north of Chicago. It seat around 9,500 residents. The first settler in the area was James Herriot who came to the area in 1837. In 1847, John Wentworth established a flour mill on the east side of town and soon began to produce hay, oats, rice and other crops. In 1865, the post office was moved from Mount Prospect to what is now Northbrook because of increasing postal needs due to growing population in the area. In 1915, an ice cream parlor opened in Mount Prospect and continued operation until it burned down in 1978. The plant produced many flavors of ice cream including mint chocolate chip and cherry pie. During World War II, Mount Prospect served as a training base for military forces stationed in nearby Will County responsible for providing food for troops across all army corps stationed throughout Illinois. Today mount prospect is known as a bedroom community for Chicago with many people commuting into the city each day for work or pleasure; however there are also several businesses and restaurants located here that continue to thrive despite being near downtown Chicago
Mount Prospect, Illinois was founded in 1808 by John Marshall. The town was named after the Mount Prospect, Ohio mountain range. The first settler in Mount Prospect was George Stephenson. In 1836, the town became a city and was renamed Chicago. In 1893, Chicago merged with other cities to form the City of Chicago and Mount Prospect became part of that city.
