Mount Prospect was a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Mount Prospect was John Burroughs, who arrived in 1837. He and his family built a log cabin on the present site of Mount Prospect in 1839. In 1840, George Washington Morrison moved to Mount Prospect from Pella and started a small grocery store called the Morrison Store. In 1845, Amos Kendall founded Kendall & Amick Paper Mill on the west side of town and soon became one of the leading paper mills in Illinois. In 1865, James Gamble established Gamble's Brewery on Elm Street near First Avenue and Randolph Road. The brewery produced beer for local consumption and export until it closed in 1931. In 1861, Augustus Kelley purchased 1/4 acre (0.28 km2) of land north of town lot number 10 for $5 peracre (0.24 ha). With this purchase he laid out what would become Mount Prospect Township which was organized on November 3rd, 1871 under the name "Mount Prospect." On October 6th 1870 Charles Aiken donated 4 acres (1 ha) east of Maplewood Cemetery to be used as a cemetery for all residents of township limits with no burial privileges within city limits or villages subject to city jurisdiction only; this land later became known as Arlington Heights Cemetery (). At that time there were ten families living within township limits with four death certificates from 1870-1881 showing just two people buried there: Mr./Mrs./Mr.(?) Aiken and their daughter Sarah Aiken (Dorothy). Mrs.(?) Aiken is also listed on one remaining death certificate from 1881-1882 but her date cannot be located due to lack of evidence either she died before or afterNovember 6th 1870 (). On January 2nd 1893 Solomon Sibley opened an ice cream parlor at 5800 Wabash Ave which served as the nucleus around which many other businesses sprung up over ensuing years including restaurants like Uncle Remus' Restaurant at 5301 Wabash Ave., Joe's Pizza at 5522 Wabash Ave., Deluxe Bakery/ Cafe at 5752 Wabash Ave., Hollywood Cafeteria/Hotel at 5700 N Lincoln Rd.,physical education school called 'The School House' operated by Grandma Moses until 1908 when it merged into Mt Pleasant High School (), taverns such as The Buffalo Bill Saloon located at 5802 N Pulaski Rd./5710 N Lincoln Rd./5712 N Washtenaw Rd.; business incubation programs such as The Chicago Athletic Club's Men’s Gymnasium/Ladies Room located adjacent to Sheridan Road between Hoyt Street and Country Club Drive; movie theaters like Fox Movietone screens films outdoors along Cook County line starting around 1926; amusement parklike Park Regency located across Cook County line next to Joliet Speedway
In 1837, when Illinois was admitted to the Union as a state, Mount Prospect was one of the first towns in the new state. It was named for General James K. Polk, who served as President of the United States from 1847 to 1849. The town began as a small community of about 100 people and grew rapidly after it became an important railroad stop. In 1870, Mount Prospect became the seat of government for Cook County, Illinois, which is now part of Chicago.
