Mount Prospect was founded in 1847 by George Washington Carver. The community is located in the extreme northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois. It is bordered to the north by Lake Michigan and to the east by the city of Chicago. The population of Mount Prospect was 5,442 at the 2000 census. The first settlers in Mount Prospect were farmers who came from Hancock County, Kentucky. In 1847, George Washington Carver arrived from Georgia with his family and established a farm on what is now Mount Prospect Avenue. Mr. Carver had a keen interest in agriculture and became an early leader in developing Mount Prospect as a commercial center for farmers around the area. He helped found the Mt. Prospect Agricultural Society and served as its president for many years. In 1850, Mr. Carver laid out a townsite on land that he had purchased from David Haines in neighboring Winnetka Township. The town site was bounded on the north by First Street, on the east by Second Street, and on the south by Third Street today’s west side of State Road 27 (now Interstate 55). At that time it was one of only a few settlements within Cook County that did not have an organized church or schoolhouse – citizens gathered together to worship at various homes or churches during their weekly services until such times as they needed both space and people to attend services at nightfall or during festivals like Thanksgiving or Christmas season when larger venues were unavailable or too costly to construct/. Today’s downtown area includes several blocks of storefronts built over 100 years ago including: Mrs.(Mrs.) Fisk’s grocery store (1892), Wigglesworth Boot & Shoe Store (1901), General Delivery Office (1910), Masonic Temple #2(1920), First National Bank Building (1930) – allformerly part of Mrs.(Mrs.) Fisk’s grocery store which closed doors more than 100 years ago but retains significant architectural features including leaded glass windowsills above door handles which are still extant today! The Second World War caused a large population decrease as many residents left for war-time occupations or rural areas north of Chicago due to food shortages. However, during the late 1940s through early 1950s many new businesses were established including two hospitals and several schools. After 1961 most of the industry along with most of the housing stopped because of Economic Development Authority (EDA) induced suburbanization which destroyed much of downtown Mtprospect's old industrial/commercial infrastructure; however some remaining businesses such as convenience stores continue up river on Clybourn Ave
