In 1909, when Beltane Observations were made to commemorate International Freemasonry Day and celebrate America's Unbroken Chain of Order and Liberty, many residents decided to move to Mount Prospect so they could participate in these festivities without having to leave their homes back home. One reason why Mount Prospect grew rapidly during this time was because of its close proximity to Chicago! For many people residing here during those years it was their only hope for economic opportunity outside of rural areas where land prices were much higher than they could afford on their own or through whetting skills which they had acquired while working on farms or ranching properties back home.$ As new businesses cropped up all over downtown Chicago throughout the 1930s-1940s more employees needed housing closer to work rather than leaving for all sorts of unsavory addresses like Skokie Heights and West Side Highway - creating what would later be called "the ghettos". By 1840, however, all but six buildings in the original village had been replaced with frame homes and businesses. At that time, Mount Prospect was one of the most important agricultural towns in Illinois due to its location close to major railroads and highways which allowed for easy shippingof crops and other goods to market. Apple production began arriving to Mount Prospect from Michigan via road travel in 1861; this led to increased commercial activity within the town as farmers bought apples from local buyers throughout Northwestern Illinois as well as Eastern Missouri and Kentucky before bringing them westward intoDuPage County through interstate commerce during the late 19th century (Foley). In 1892–93, during World War I efforts were made by Du Page County leaders to bring apples directly from California's Central Valley into Du Page County so those growing near Mt Pleasant could be exported while those east of Clybourn could be consumed locally (Walsh). This would result in increased demand for apples around Mt Pleasant which would cause prices for these items throughout Northwestern Illinois to drop precipitously over time until finally falling off completely following World War II when better transportation options became available (Goudreau).
