Morton is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,806 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Morton is one of the most ethnically diverse towns in Illinois and has a wide variety of cultures represented. The community has its own Protestant church as well as Moslem and Hindu temples. The first settlers to Morton were Methodist missionaries who came to the area in 1853. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Fox River, just north of present-day Morton Park. After two years, they abandoned their cabin and moved to what is now North Morton Township. In 1855, they founded what would become North Morton Baptist Church which remains today one of the most respected churches in town. In 1861, James Waddell arrived from Ohio with his family and began farming land east of modern day Morton Park on what would become South Vernon Township. He named his new township after his father-in-law General Philip Sheridan who had fought for Lincoln during the American Civil War. After only three months, he ceded all his land south of Harrison Street to local residents for development into what is now South Vernon Township proper including what became North Morton Township (now known as South Shore). In 1875, John Clements opened up a general store at what is now Northwest corner Third Street/State Road 362 and Randolph Avenue in North Morton Township which along with other stores soon gave rise to this name by becoming known for fresh produce available throughout much of northern Kane County from early summer until late fall right through Christmas time...Clements's store continued being open until it burned down in 1951 while still providing local cuisine that continues to be popular today among many people living within 100 miles or so radius
