The town name is taken from Orleans Parish, Louisiana. Morton was named after Abram Morton's great-uncle and namesake, who had settled in what is now Orleans Parish in 1795. Many of the first residents of Morton were Scots-Irish Protestants who emigrated to America during the early 1800s. The first store in Morton opened its doors on July 4, 1871. In 1916, the Chicago Tribune reported that "Morton has not only one of the largest post office districts within this country but also one of its most important commercial centres." In 1941, World War II began with Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor and USS Missouri (BB-38) being sunk off Hawaii; as a result of this event, many businesses closed or merged their operations into larger ones as American companies geared up for war production. This caused a decrease in business activity overall throughout Butler County due to wartime rationing which impacted almost all sectors of society including trade and industry. However, due to the high demand for goods during the war years from both consumers and producers alike, business flourished once again following Victory through various strategies such as marketing his products abroad or creating partnerships with other businesses within Butler County that could benefit from wartime production exemptions such as those granted to shipyards and munitions plants.
