Morton, Illinois is a small town located in the Pekin County of westcentral Illinois. The population was 521 at the 2000 census. Morton is named after General Robert E. Morton, who fought in the Mexican-American War and was a delegate to the 1868 U.S. Constitutional Convention. The first settlers in Morton were three families from New York City: John Morse, his wife Esther and their two children Moses and Rachel; Isaac Cohen, Sr., his wife Sarah, and their one son Isaac; and Mordecai Van Slyke (1784-1863), his wife Hannah (1786-1857), their six children Solomon (1826-1906), Henrietta (1829-1910), Nathan (1832-1925), Theresa Jane Brierly (baptized 1835) and Lewis Israel Burritt Jr. (baptized 1840) arrived on April 6, 1837 from what is now Canada via the Great Lakes region. They were followed by about seventy immigrants over the next two years as various families arrived to take up land grants given them by early settler Samuel Hodge. In 1839 four more families cluster around Bennett House on West Main Street: George Foxworth, James Cookseye, Job Reaume and Nicholas Greggioni/Griffin/. By 1850 there were fourteen families living in Morton with an average of five per family; twenty more had moved into the village by 1870 when it had a total population of 1123 residents according to the 1860 census list of landowners in Potter County organized by township). The railroad reached Morton on October 7, 1859 when it laid track east from Pekin through what is now Monroe Township across from present day Mount Pleasant Cemetery beside Porter’s Ferry landing which served as both station for passengers coming into Pekin Countywestbound or eastbound trains going out of Pekin Countysouthwestward or northbound trains going southward all along its route until that point either way being within territorial limits of Chicago where goods could be shipped before being delivered to market at Minden Junction then continuing onto Wabash Railroad tracks running parallel northwest then turning northeast reaching its namesake city just southwest of its current terminus at Armour Avenue today known as Union Station which opened on November 8th 1865 originally serving as both a passenger depot for local travelers coming into Chicago via Union Station then also acting as an intercity train terminal connecting Chicago with other midwestern cities including Indianapolis Louisville St Louis etc.). In 1870 there were only 140 residents living in Morton with an average of six per family but this number soon exploded due largely to new construction projects such as Lake Shore Drive extending east through town center becoming Route 66 later renamed I-294 today linking many smaller towns nearChicago including Crystal City Greenwood Park Herndon Arlington Heights etc.) With growth came challenges such as limited space for development especially outside central town while also facing increasing competition from larger towns within easy reach such as DuPage county having been founded by French farmers following Indian Removal plus adding Springfield Darien Naperville Wheaton Elmhurst Schaumburg Orland Park Orland Park Bloomington
