Morton, Illinois is a town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,215 at the 2010 census. The Morton area was developed as a cotton plantations in the late 19th century and early 20th century. The first white settlers arrived in Morton in 1853. They were led by James Morton, an American Revolutionary War veteran and founder of the city of Chicago. He and his family purchased lands east of the Mississippi River from Native Americans and built a small log cabin on what is now south side of North Avenue in 1855. In 1865, they purchased more land and erected a larger cabin on what is now east side of Main Street. In 1870, Jethro Arnold founded the first radio station in America with transmitter facilities located near present-day Mortonville. In 1915–16, he organized one of the most important agricultural festivals ever held in McHenry County –the State Fair of Illinois –held at his farmstead on Centre Road north of town.. In 1922–23, he served as president pro tem for the Cook County Board Of Elections; later that year he became Cook County's first election commissioner.. In 1951–52 when Illinois merged with Indiana to form the United States federal government following World War II, Morton became part of Harrisonburg Township (later Arlington Heights). It wasn't until 1990 when Harrisonburg Township was annexed into Morton proper. After years spent being primarily an agricultural community which relied heavily upon slave labor to produce their crops—and during which many residents lost their homes due to weather or crop failures—Morton entered into heavy manufacturing during the 1970s when it becoming accessible due to advances within Ford Motor Company’s new found diversification opportunities across all product lines including Automotive Manufacturing plants adjacent to where Ives Products Incorporated produces other hardware items such as nails and screws almost directly across Ives property line just outside downtown Porterville then down East Burnside Street back onto main street out into ‘town square’ again past our post office just past there until we got out onto Fulton Street adjoining current day Walmart lot then Turnpike exit #2 off I-75 about 2 miles EAST OF MORTON HEIGHTS
