Morton, Illinois is a small town located in the far northwestern corner of the United States. The community was founded in 1871 by Noah Morton and his wife, Lillie. The early settlers were farmers and ranchers who relied on hogs, cattle, and sheep to generate income. By the late 1800s, however, Morton had become an important center for ammunition manufacturing. In 1901, local manufacturers merged to form Remington Arms Company. That same year, Morton became home to the first red dot sight system in the United States when a group of entrepreneurs created American Red Dot Sight Co., Ltd. The name Morton is derived from an early settler, Michael Morton, and it means "humble place." Morton was founded by Michael Morton in 1836. He named it after his father's home parish in Scotland - Morton Churchyard. A post office called Morton was established in 1839, and remained in operation until 1963. Morton had a railroad station on the Chicago and Northwestern line from 1854 to 1861. The station was located west of present-day Elm Street on what is now Kawasaki Road. The first store in town opened on Elm Street in 1865. In that year, the community also became home to The Methodist Episcopal Zion Church which served as the town's first schoolhouse and church until 1946 when it moved to its current location on Orchard Drive east of Main Street. In 1870, a cheese factory was built northwest of town by George Fenton near what is now Mound Road (Old Route 66). That factory continued to be operational through World War II and into the postwar period; however, production ceased after 1945 becauseof competition from foreign producers such as Swiss Chalet and Unilever Europe AG.. In 1957, KFC began operations as one of several restaurants inside Midwestern Bell Telephone Company's Radio Shack facility adjacent to Ulysses S Grant High School; this restaurant remains open today as One Mill Place KFC with a full-service bar including fast food items such as chicken McNuggets and fries . In 1978, local electrical contractor Donnell Harriman invested $2 million dollars into creating an agricultural area known today as "The Farm" adjacent to Moran Elementary School southeast of town center; development included houses, sheds for pigs and cows., tractor dealership/parts store/, grocery store/, farm implements/farm supplies,, turkey processing plant/. Today there are over 100 acres within boundaries designated for agricultural use including: schools (Moran), churches (St John's Lutheran), employment areas (Donnell Harriman Corporation)
