Morton, Illinois is an agricultural and rural community located in Pulaski County, Illinois. The population was 5,711 at the 2000 census. Morton was founded in 1868 by John Morton and his family. The community owes its foundation to two visionary men: J.B. McCormick and George Westfall. On October 7, 1868, McCormick organized a meeting to discuss the establishment of a new town in what is now Morton due to the railroad’s impending arrival. Several other towns were consideration for the site but no one wanted to leave their home base so large and developed elsewhere. In order to make sure that the town would be established properly and without developments taking away valuable farmland, J.B. McCormick appointed George Westfall as its first mayor with instructions to establish proper governance within the town limits while continuing special attention towards developing commerce within it- something that had been lacking in other neighboring towns at the time of their founding (Fletcher & Ford 24). A few months after this meeting occurred, residents voted 3-2 on incorporation into a new township which would later become Pulaski County (Fletcher & Ford 25). The late 1800s saw an increase in optical equipment production in America due primarily to technological advancements made by European manufacturers such as those from England (Lisle 1979).
