Morton, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,486 at the 2010 census. Morton is one of the oldest towns in Kane County and was founded on November 3, 1868 by George Wadleigh Morton. The first store in town was called "The Post" and opened on Main Street. It was destroyed by a fire in 1872 but rebuilt within two years. In 1876 the first telephone line arrived to Morton and it became known as the " wires of Morton". The first school in town was built on High Street in 1877 and named after Mrs. Anna Goudreau which closed in 1940 but reopened as the "Morton School" in 1951 when it became part of Park District No. 2 In 1902-03 an electric streetlight system replaced the hand held lights used until then In 1907-08 an expressway through town connected with I-80 to serve Chicago In 1916-17 a new water tower was constructed on North Main Street which served both city services and residents until 1956 when it burned down In 1924-25 a new football stadium (now known as FirstEnergy Stadium) was built on South Broadway which served as home field for Morton High School from 1925 until its closure in 1990 In 1928-29 a new baseball park (now known as FirstEnergy Park) was built across from FirstEnergy Stadium and later renamed Joe Louis Arena after American boxer Joe Louis who played there from 1930 until his retirement from professional boxing in 2007 Morton's economy has been centered around its agricultural production including corn, beans, eggs, potatoes etc since pioneer days
