In 1974, Morton became part of the Chicago metropolitan area when it was annexed by Chicago. The history of Morton begins withDaniel Webster Morton, who established himself as a farmer in 1854 on land that he had acquired from his father-in-law. By 1861, he had built a substantial farmstead which soon became one of the largest in Kane County. He also developed a commercial enterprise which included two cotton mills (the first located on State Street), one woolen mill (the second) and three grocery stores; all were destroyed by fire in 1908. For many years after this event, it was difficult for residents to obtain insurance against fires because their businesses were not considered within the definition of “fire protection” under state law then. An ordinance passed in 1907 provided for fire prevention by creating an 8x8 foot zone around all business properties within city limits; however, this ordinance did not take effect until 1909 due to opposition from local business owners who saw their interests protected by government regulations they could not change or repeal without management approval). In 1875, Daniel Webster Morton married Anna Lavinia Beekman (1848-1927), daughter of New York lawyer George Beekman (1792-1868). She was born into an old family dynasty that traced its ancestry back to 17th century Dutch colonists who settled in what is now Albany County, New York. Anna Lavinia Beekman would play an important role in her husband's political career and later serve as his First Lady during World War I and World War II; she also played key roles in developing McCormick & Company meatpacking plants near Buffalo Grove IL and LaSalle IL respectively. Anna Lavinia Beekman died suddenly at home on December 10th 1927 after giving birth to her only child: infant son Clifford Allen Beekman Jr.. At first glance, it may appear that Daniel Webster Morton never remarried but upon further examination it appears that he did so at some point between 1901-1908 after his wife's death - thus resulting in two families living together under one roof for six years! This type of marriage survived intact despite allegations made against him subsequent to his death alleging physical abuse both towards Anna LaviniaBeekman as well as Clifford Allen Beekman Jr.. A funeral service was held on December 12th 1927 following her sudden death leaving behind 2 children plus 3 stepchildren - consisting entirelyof women!
