Morton, Illinois is a city located in Logan County, Illinois. The population was 24,821 at the 2010 census. Morton was founded in 1854 by John Fenton and his wife Eliza. It became a town in 1884, and then a city in 1907. The name of the city is from an early settler, Isaac Morton. Morton's rich history can be found within its walls as well as throughout the surrounding area. In 1854, John Fenton founded Morton on land he had acquired from the United States government for $2 per acre (the equivalent of $ today). The first store opened here in 1855. This business quickly grew into one of the most successful in town; it served as both a grocery and hardware store until 1920 when it became a restaurant. By 1907, Morton had reached its peak population with over 50 businesses operating under one roof. The growth of this industry led to increased competition and soon began to cause problems for Fenton and his heirs who were unable to keep up with demand or expand their business beyond what was necessary to meet customer needs. Despite this adversity however, the store continued operation until 1922 when it closed its doors due to financial limitations caused by rapid growth alone - not because of any lack of customer service or support but because there simply wasn't enough space available for all of those businesses combined! This story does not end there though; during World War II many residents relocated to other parts of Illinois so that they could join forces with their friends and compatriots fighting against Nazi Germany; Morton saw some hefty industrial growth due to this wartime boom (notwithstanding being annexed by Des Plaines Township during peacetime!). However even after the war ended there was still much redevelopment taking place here – again thanks largely to the persistence of these local entrepreneurs! The heyday of Morton’s commercial success eventually passed away though – but its legacy will live on long after all these businesses have moved out or been replaced by more recent arrivals! In 1812, General James K. Polk led an army through Kane County during the War of 1812 and discovered that Morton was unoccupied by any Indian tribe other than the Potawatomi. He ordered Colonel George Armstrong Custer to burn all the villages in that area as a warning to any future settlers who might attempt such an act without provocation or justification. Morton was organized as a village on December 12th, 1825 when John Sutherlin donated 2 acres (8 hectares) of land east of present day Park Avenue for public use only; it became known as Sutherlin Square today due to his donation. It was this square where General Anthony Wayne met his wife Rachel in 1795 while troops were encamped at Fort Dearborn during their campaign against Native Americans near Detroit; she would later become one of Wayne's most famous women supporters outside of America On November 6th 1830 Samuel Morse wired news from Ann Arbor to Washington D.C., one mile west of present day Michigan Avenue; this early form of communication still uses Morse code today
