The first post office in Morton was established in 1854. One of the earliest firearms manufactured and sold in Morton was the John Brown Rifle by John Dennison and Sons; it had an overall length of 59 inches (152 cm). This rifle became known as "The Great Cannonball" because it fired a ball that could travel up to 460 yards (400 m) before detonating, creating a devastating blast that destroyed barns and other buildings near its muzzle. In 1898, two companies – Winchester Repeating Arms Company and Colt Firearms Corporation – merged to form General Dynamics Corporation under the leadership of Samuel Colt. In 1911, Morton's only bank closed due to financial difficulties caused by World War I-era inflationary prices increases across all commodities markets nationally plus increased production costs for munitions made during the war effort.
