The guns that are currently used at the Morton Rifle and Pistol Club were built between 1870 and 1880. Some of the earliest handguns used in this area were pistols made by Smith & Wesson. Between 1860 and 1865, there were three Targets openings in Morton; one each year. The first target to be shot at was a man on horseback named John Pritzker. Morton, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois and is the seat of Morton Township. The population was 521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. When settlers arrived in what would become Morton Township on October 15, 1836, they named their new community "Granville." As time passed and more people moved into the township, some decided to name it after local pioneers or friends. One such man was John Pritzker who donated land for a school and post office in 1853. By 1870, there were six schools operating in Morton Township; two public schools and four private schools. On September 25, 1907, the first gasoline station in America was opened in Morton when Wm Hargrave bought a subscription for $1 from Jno Kappelman. According to one source, "Morton's growth can be dated back to this day" when an ExxonMobil refinery constructed on State Street three miles east of town started supplying oil to nearby residents. By 1951-1952 there were over 100 businesses located within a radius of 10 miles of town; that number had grown to over 200 by 1990-1991. The village hall building which served as the original courthouse burned down on July 4th 1986 but was rebuilt with assistance from Marshall County Historical Society and reopened as part of its exhibits program on October 9th 1998 According to the 2010 census data*, Morton has reached 604 residents*. The racial makeup* of Morton according to this data is 97% White (non-Hispanic), 1% African American (0.2%), 0% Native American (0.1%), 2% Asian Pacific Islander*, 3% Hispanic or Latino*, 2% Two or More Races* (.8%). *The percentages shown are for individuals residing only within their individual households
