Morton has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated Cfa on the Köppen Climate Classification system. The community lies about 25 miles west-northwest of Peoria, Ill., and about 25 miles east-northeast of Chicago. Morton was founded by Nicholas Morton in 1839. The first post office was established in 1840. In 1846, Morton became the county seat for Kane County; it remained that way until 1983 when they were moved to Champaign County. The community took its name from Nicholas Morton and his father Jacob Morton Sr., who had earlier settled there in 1818. At first, only men could vote and property ownership was limited to two families; eventually women were granted voting rights in 1907. In 1913, Morton hosted the world's largest agricultural fair which drew over 100,000 people from around the world. Today, this event is still held annually at McCormick Field Park near downtown Morton on Saturday afternoons during September or October with various exhibits and performances throughout the day including a livestock show open to all visitors starting at 10 A.M.; lawn bowling championships have also been held here periodically over recent years involving large crowds from across Midwestern United States as well as Canada and Mexico City respectively
