In 1871, the Chicago & Northwestern Railway built a line from Chicago to Morton via Aurora and Hammondsport; this led to the construction of new hotels and other businesses near downtown Mogadore Avenue and State Street. In 1916-1917, local residents voted to name their city after General David Dixon Morton (1813-1876), an officer of the Union army during the Civil War who served as governor of Missouri before being elected as Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President). Morton had a population of 30,527 at the 2000 census; its total area is . In 2010-2011, it had 54,851 people living within its borders according to US Census data - making it one of Illinois' most populous cities by far. In 1832, Morton became the capital of Illinois, and the town continued to grow. By 1840, Morton had an estimated 1,500 residents. In 1845, the town granted land to Daniel Webster for a university. The university flourished in Morton until it closed in 1893 after allegations of corruption. Today, much of what is left of Morton can be found within the city limits of Chicago.
