Morton, Illinois is a small town in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It is located on the north side of Kane County and has a small shopping mall and two villages. Morton was platted in 1871 by John Ladd as part of the new townsite for Racine. The first settler to arrive in Morton was Hemanus Griggs, who built a log cabin on the site that still stands today. The population of Morton grew slowly until World War II when it began to grow rapidly due to wartime demand for military hardware and workers. During the war, many residents left town because they were unable to find work elsewhere or because they did not want to be near enemy lines. In 1945, after the war ended, Morton's population size decreased again because there were no new residents announced for the area until 1951 when widow Esther Shriver moved into town from nearby Winnetka with her daughter Jane Shriver Sellers. Shortly afterwards, another family moved into town - this time consisting of three sisters - named Jeanne Smith Blaisdel-Rossi (born November 15th 1943), Linda Polesky Blaisdel-Rossi (born December 5th 1944) and Kathy Moran Blaisdel-Rossi (born January 28th 1945). They started a grocery store next door to their father's business which quickly became one of the most popular businesses in town. Between 1951 and 1960, Morton had an average population growth rate of 2%. In 1961, following annexation by Kane County from Des Plaines Township, Morton's population size increased again due to its close proximity to other larger towns in Kane County such as Chicago and Peoria. That year also saw the opening of Main Street School which served students from kindergarten through eighth grade until it closed in 1978 due to budget cuts caused by economic recession. After that point, attendance at school shifted increasingly towards daycare facilities which continued up until present day when Main Street School reopened as Lincoln High School under new management in 2003 with more than 1800 students enrolled across grades nine through twelve including special needs students who are now housed within five separate buildings within campus boundaries instead of scattered throughout multiple neighborhoods like before
