Morton, Illinois is known for its gun-related history. The city was founded in 1839 by Horace Greeley and his family, who were pioneers in the early American west. Morton became a town in 1853 and later a village. The first gun shop in Morton was opened in 1875 by George Brown and brothers Harry and Willis H. Brown. The town's first police department was created in 1907. In 1924, the United States Post Office moved from nearby Rock Island to Morton, making it the first post office outside of Chicago to serve an entire city block.

The following year, Morton voted to secede from Illinois due to political instability within the state government. As a result, most of Vernon Township (northwest side) became part of newly formed Joliet Township (southwest side). At its peak during World War II, Morton had a population of 3,000 people; however, during that time its economy declined because much attention was focused on Joliet Township's growing city center."

Morton was founded in 1824 by George Washington Morton and his son John Morton. The name "Morton" originated from a Shawnee word meaning " Settlement." George Washington Morton had been born in 1793 in what is now Knox County, Virginia and died in 1867 in what is now Kane County, Illinois. He was an officer in the American Revolution and later served as Mayor of Danville, IL (1850-54). In 1824 he founded Morton's Grove on the present site of downtown Morton.

The population decreased during the 19th century due to increased demand for land in Illinois and Kansas. However, it regained some prosperity during World War I because many munitions were produced in nearby Decatur and Chicago.
