Morton, Illinois is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1836 by John Morton and his family. The population was 12,000 at the 2010 census. Morton is the county seat of McHenry County. In addition to Morton, other towns in the area include Arlington Heights and East Dundee. The city of Chicago is located about 25 miles (40 km) to the north-northwest of Morton. The first settlers in what is now Morton were John and Susannah Morton who moved from Northampton, England in 1787. They arrived on horseback with their families and promptly erected a cabin near what would become the town's current site. By 1800, they had four children: James (1789-1855), tumor (1800-1854), Sarah Jane (1801-1868) and John Jr.(1800-1866). John Atherton purchased land east of present day Arlington Heights in 1836 for $1,500 which he donated to the township as long as it remained unclaimed for 50 years This donation became law when General George Washington granted land west of Aurora to Morton Township on December 6th 1837 . In 1840 John Atherton donated another piece of land which formed part of today's eastern border with Arlington Heights This donation also became law when General George Washington granted land west of Aurora to Morton Township on December 6th 1840 In 1865 Charles Wetherbee began construction on what would later become known as "the White House" which he named after President Abraham Lincoln That same year Congress passed an act incorporating "Morton Township" into McHenry County From that time until 1933 there was only one mayor per township
