Morton is a small town in the Kankakee County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Morton was founded in 1836 by Colonel John Morton and his family. The city of Morton was incorporated on May 5, 1875. In 1902, it became a county seat and remained so until 1959 when it reverted to Kankakee County jurisdiction. Gun lights were first developed as signaling devices during World War I when American military forces were using Morse code to communicate with their allies on the battlefield. At that time, gunfire could only be heard over large open areas such as battlefields or ports where ships could be seen moored. Morton has been home to most notably both Mayor Richard Mclntyre (D) and Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. (D). As a result, many famous people have called or visited Morton including Barack Obama and U2 frontman Bono; however, no mayor or congressman has ever lived in Morton continuously since its incorporation into Kane County effective July 1st 1927. In addition to its large number of residents who work inside or near their schools each day – whether they are students attending local colleges or working adults keeping their families fed – there are also numerous businesses located throughout town that contribute significantly to its economy: among them is KFC which operates two stores within walking distance from every other; Pizza Hut; Subway; Jamba Juice; Mastercard; Dollar General; Walmart - all with more than ten locations across four states combined!
