It was named after General David Morton, who fought during the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. Senator from Illinois. The first settlers in Morton were three families who arrived in 1814: the Armstrongs, Browns, and Hartsfieldes. After a few years of settlement, they sold their land to John Doherty in 1825 for $3 per acre. Doherty had been born in Ireland and immigrated to America as a teenager to find his fortune. He started out as a farmer but quickly became one of the biggest merchants and developers in Kane County. In 1829 he built the first school building in Morton, which still stands today; it was designed by architect James Paine and built with funding from his brother Amos Paine. Doherty also developed other businesses such as an flour mill, lumberyard, cotton gin (the first ever commercially operated cotton gin in America), and restaurant/bar/cabinet store combination called The Tavern (later known as The Lion). He also helped found the now defunct Logan Township Association which promoted agricultural development within Logan Township while providing social services such as day care for women and children living near farmssteads that were too far away for them to visit on their own behalf or because they couldn't afford it. In 1850 Morton's population reached 1,000 people when Abraham Lincoln came through town on his way to Urbana Municipal Court hearings; he stopped at The Tavern for dinner before continuing on his journey southward that night." "Morton’s growth paralleled that of its surrounding villages until about 1910 when farming dried up due to overpopulation." From then until World War II there wasn’t much major development done here aside from some manufacturing jobs around Kendallville." During World War II many residents served in Our Navy Shipsyards at Lockport-Kankakee Shores where they worked creating new munitions plants including aluminum cansculpturing plants using aircraft parts produced at nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base." Many residents following World War II migrated westward into Decatur County or Midwest states looking for better opportunities." One resident said "I wanted what my brothers had - good jobs with good pay - so I left home". Today most of those who live here still maintain close ties with their local community including attending public events such as fiesta days or carnivals."
Morton was founded in 1809 by John Morton, a surveyor and political leader. The town was named for General James Wilkinson, who led the United States army during the War of 1812. In 1850, Morton became the capital of Illinois.
