Morton, Illinois is a small town located in the southcentral portion of the United States. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. It is named after James Morton, who purchased land in 1835 and built a sawmill. The town began to grow rapidly after World War II when people relocated from larger cities for economic reasons. The population reached 10,000 by 1970. Today, Morton remains an agricultural community with a reliance on agriculture and fishing. Gun barrels are one of Morton's most important industries. The first guns were made in Morton in 1836 by George Stephenson and others associated with the Northern gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson Company (now Glock). Shotguns were not developed until around 1840 when John Fenton created the modern shotgun design using components from older sporting rifles. By 1849, two shotguns companies had been formed in Morton- Blackford Arms and Whitehall Firearms Company- both of which continued making firearms until 1903. Morton has had many different occupants over the years, including farmers, lumberjacks, miners, and businessmen. The most recent residents are the family of Bob Morton who live in the town today. Morton was originally settled by men from Yorkshire, England. They arrived on horseback and set up camp for the winter near what is now downtown Morton. The first settlers were men named Hodgson, Sowerby, and Marshall. They engaged in farming and logging activities until1871 when they decided to move to what is now Morton County IL. The first post office was established in Morton on October 17th of that year. The name of the original post office was honors Joseph Mortimer who served as Postmaster from 1868-1872. At that time there were only two other posts offices located within five miles of where Morton currently stands: at Quincy (population 5) and Carbondale (population 10). In 1876 local businessman Jno Fenton donated land for a public school which became known as Fort Dearborn School District No 1 (). In 1907 it merged into Carbondale School District No 2 (). In 1912-13 it merged into Carbondale School District No 3 (). Finally in 1927 it became part of Carbondale School District No 4(). The community changed hands several times during its early years but always remained tightly knit with fellow Loggers Local Lodge #2 being especially influential due to their shared roots among them all. In 1951 local man Hosea Butler purchased much of the defunct Carbondale Lumber Company assets making him one of only two white owners remaining within that company’s assets after its closure some 37 years earlier When African Americans began working alongside whites starting around 1910 they encountered numerous challenges both formalized through laws like Jim Crow laws while also having to navigate inherent prejudices against people based upon their skin color even if those attitudes had softened over time . One such example occurred when white laborer Whitey Hickey refused to take his job as an errand boy at local grocery store because he considered black people inferior . This incident led to an investigation by management which ultimately resulted in Hickey getting his job back . However this experience did not mark any end to racism towards African Americans living in rural areas at that time
