Morton, Illinois is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 581 at the 2000 census. Morton is located on the eastern edge of the Chicago metropolitan area and is bordered by Aurora to the north, La Salle to the east, Downers Grove to the south and Cook County to the west. It offers a mix of old-fashioned farm practices with more recent advances in agricultural technology and has been called "thejewel of Kane County". The town was founded in 1872 by John Smeaton Morton as a station on the Underground Railroad. Morton's father had emigrated from England in 1847 and his mother had come over two years earlier. They built a cabin near present-day Mount Vernon which they named Morton Creek after their son's home countryman. In 1875 John Smeaton Morton married Anna Seward who also lived there. Anna Seward was from Old Lyme Connecticut and her parents were Revolutionary War veterans who had moved there when she was young. Josephine (née North) Morse also lived in Morton for awhile before moving to Aurora about 1915. By 1876, when city boundaries were drawn around Chicago, most of what is now Kane County lay within newly organized county lines - including parts of what are now Park Ridge, Prospect Heights and Elmhurst - so much so that Marshall University (now Southern Illinois University Carbondale) operated out of one building on State Street in Carbondale until 1889 when it moved into its current location adjacent to UIUC's Library Campus! In 1879 John Smeaton Morton started an agricultural store called The Grist Millinery store on State Street which became known throughout town as "The Grain Store." This business continued until 1911 when it merged with another local grocery store chain called The Mercery Company which still operates under that name today. In 1902 John Smeaton Morton purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land adjoining present-day Morristown Road east of present day Downers Grove Prairie just north of Lake Michigan where he began construction on what would become his trademarked "Morton House" house model park/village style community complete with roads, ponds, woods etc.. He named it after himself and slowly added others including his wife Anna (nee Seward), children Josephine Jr., Elizabeth Jane ("Bessie"), Donald Wayne ("Fritz")and Alice Palmer Curtis among others over time...today known as "Morton Village". Mr.'Smeaton died suddenly aged 64 in 1922 leaving behind an estate valued at $2 million dollars...Today this property forms part of Northwestern Illinois University's McCormick School Of Agriculture & Food Science campus!
Morton was founded in 1836 by James Morton and his family. The town grew quickly due to the production of corn, beans, and other crops. In 1892, Morton was named the county seat of La Salle County. The population peaked at over 10,000 in 1910 and declined during the Great Depression. In 1935, Morton merged with nearby Rockford to form a new city. The city experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its proximity to military bases and key industry. However, the war led to a decline in population and businesses after the war ended. Today, Morton is a small town with a modest economy based primarily on agriculture.
