Morton, Illinois is a small town in the counties of Kane and McHenry. It is located about 20 miles north of Chicago on I-88 and about 25 miles south of the city on I-94. Morton was founded in 1836 by farmers from what is now Waukesha County. The population was 5,500 at the 2000 census. The town has a small shopping center, a library, and two churches. The first settlers to Morton were farmers who had come from Germany in 1835. They arrived with their families and began to farm the land that now includes Morton. In 1836, Congress passed an act authorizing the erection of a schoolhouse in Morton. The first students were taught by Reverend John Halsey and Mr. James McKinney. The school was built on the site of present-day Union High School (now Morton Middle School). In 1840, when Illinois became a state, Morton became part of Kane County. For many years it was one of the most populous towns in Kane County. In 1851, however, it lost its status as an incorporated village because there were no residents living within its limits who wanted to be self-governing citizens. Instead, it became an unincorporated township under the jurisdiction of Kane County authorities

Morton, Illinois is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois. The town was founded by the Morleys in 1847. Morton is home to the Morton Cemetery and the Morton Museum. The museum is housed in the old Masonic Temple. The Morleys were early settlers of this area and their farmstead was located on what is now State Route 3 south of downtown Morton. In 1847, they erected a log cabin on a hill overlooking their farmstead and named it after Morton, England. They also built a house on their property which still stands today. The Morleys were among the first farmers in this area and are considered pioneer farmers due to their efforts to establish agricultural life in this rural landscape. The Morleys operated a store in downtown Morton from 1858-1864 when that section of town was burned by Union troops during the American Civil War. In 1865, they sold their store and moved back to England where they continued farming until they death in 1902. Their son, George W., ran theMorley Store until it closed around 1924. From 1925-1939, Augustus Laughlin ran theMorley Museum which was located at 222 Sowell Road before moving it to its current location on Griggs Street in 1939 (the same year that his father's store closed). Morton has had many residents who have made significant contributions to local or national history including: Jens Weidner (Mayor 1969-1973), Harvey Dent (UAW Local No 2 Treasurer 1965-1968), Vernon Jordan (UAW Vice President 1984-1986), Dick Cheney (Governor of Wyoming 1975-1979) and Marvin Bush Sr.(Presidential Candidate 1989).
Morton, Illinois was named for General David Morton who fought in the Mexican-American War. The town was founded by settlers in 1846 and it became a city in 1893.
