In 1896, the town passed an ordinance prohibiting the manufacture of firearms without a permit from the city government. This legislation helped to stop gun violence in the town. The factory produced such brands as Armoury (1911), Cottage Cheese (1915), Gouda (1918), Roquefort (1920), Boursin cheese (1922), Chevre cheese (1945) and Tomme de Savoie cheese (1964). By 1990 the plant had been closed down and most of its operations were relocated to Matteson, Illinois where it remains today. The town has experienced several economic downturns over the years but has bounced back periodically since becoming an incorporated village in 1984. Total sales for all businesses combined increased from $2 million in 1986 to $14 million by 2006 before declining again to $10 million by 2010. Withstood numerous challenges during this time including annexation by neighboring townships, fire scares and budget cuts that led to closures of some businesses including two banks within three years; however overall community spirit seems to have held strong throughout these difficult times with current growth prospects looking bright especially given recent investment into digital media manufacturing products A variety of cultural events are staged annually throughout their year round calendar including arts festivals focused on music/theater presentations outdoors along with family fun days like pumpkin picking or fishing trips while also hosting golf tournaments at various courses nearby like Sleepy Hollow Golf Club which overlooks downtown Morton One popular attraction hereabouts is the annual Muddy Fork Pumpkin Festival which takes place on October 29th each year starting at 10am sharp followed by a parade through downtown followed by dinner at Pioneer Park
